It seems he's a really important player, if not the most important.

What are the essential skills he needs ?

I don't really know the skills that any position needs but the point guard seems like the player i should select well.

yes, but some are more important than others.
yes, a Center is better to have high Outside Defense than low Out.D, but which is more IMPORTANT- to train a Center for Rebounding/Inside D/ Shot Blocking? or to train him in Outside D/Jump Shot Jump Range?

unless you want to play your center as a point guard, i guess you should train him inside d, rebounding instead of outside d.
