well, the most obvious answer is that it gives your opponents more Free Throw attempts. If you go against a team that as very good free throw capabilites you will have lowered chance to win.

a broader question, that I do not have the answer to, is HOW can you get your players to have fewer fouls?
my guess is that if you play a Zone defense then your team would probably have fewer fouls. also another GUESS is to not press, as pressing players may tend to foul more. (but these are just guesses)

I think players with better defensive skills and better experience will foul less...

agreed. defensive skills would help lower fouls on the defensive side...and experience all around.
but i think zone defense would help, also

Interesting idea. But, even if your players had no defense, the coach would still order them to defend. Wouldn't they be even more likely to hack away?

we could have zajino play zone and see if his team commits fewer fouls playing zone.
also, another area that should help a player commit less fouls is Stamina. a player who has great stamina should be able to better use his experience and defending skills (and play a zone defense better!) than a player who has poor stamina

your thoughts about a player getting more fouls based on how poor his defense skill is proved correct in my scrimmage game today. i managed to have 5 players with 5 or 6 PF in my scrimmage game today. 4 of the players have very poor defender skill while one player who got 5 fouls has both Repsctable outside and inside defense skills.
