I posted this in another forum:

I see my option on the Training page for this week's spending, but nothing that shows how many 'scouting units' I can expect to have come draft day. This would be useful information to have access to.

I like this idea. It would be especially helpful around the all-star break, when player salaries increase and teams' economies change. Also, by the middle of the season it is rather possible to gauge how your team is doing in the league, and how you can expect to finish, thereby affecting your position in the draft.

For instance: If it looks like you will easily win the league, the chances of getting what you want in the first round are rather slim, and the 2nd and 3rd rounds are rather pointless. On the other hand, if you started the season thinking you would remain competitive and midway through you are in 7th with no prospect of finishing much better, it would change how much you invest in scouting.

Knowing how much you have already scouted at any given point in a season is very worthwhile.

with the number of teams run by computerized players, i think investing is not a bad thing, i guess that in the draft they choose players at random enhancing the possibility that good players slip to you

but you do not know if good players slip if you lower your scouting investments, as always it's weighing all options

If anyone knows about computerized teams in the draft, I do. I finished last season as the only human manager in my series. On draft day, I got my 1st preference in the first round, 2nd preference in the second round, and 11th preference in round three.

This season, however, I'm playing against human beings, and knowing that they aren't going to just pick players completely at random, the draft investment is far more important as an economical decision. If I win the league, there's a pretty good chance I'll get my 14th or worse preference in the first round, and I'm guessing that what I get in the 2nd in 3rd rounds won't mean squat to me. That $70,000 would likely be better spent on something else.

BTW, my 11th preference was utter crap that I sold on the TL, I can't imagine how bad a 40th preference will be...

You're assuming that your league mates are putting maximum dollars into scouting. If they are not, investing in scouting could help out big time.

Actually, I'm not. I am only investing $10/wk in scouting, and as I and my league mates are all in div. III, $20k/wk is about the maximum that is really affordable. I seriously doubt anyone in my league is investing $40k on a regular basis.

I was just attempting to agree with the OP's suggestion for a running total of scouting "points" to be displayed. There are some weeks (i.e., those with TV games), where a club has extra $$ to spend on scouting, and some weeks where scouting more than a bare minimum is counter-productive. Fluctuations in the amount spent on scouting, (along with the fact that scouting for season 3 started before the end of season 2) make it difficult to recall how much scouting has accumulated. A running total would be nice, is all.

I my conference and a lot of lower conferences, there are a lot of Bots. What's their scouting and drafting strategy? Is it just totally random?

In order for a bot to beat a human manager to a great player, I'd suppose you'd have to be pretty unlucky.

For comparison, I finished last season with a league that was probably about half active managers, half bots. Maybe slightly more bots. I had the second best record in the division, so I had pick #15.

Round 1 - 3rd preference
Round 2 - 16th preference
Round 3 - 38th preference

Needless to say, that sucked. :) None of those guys are still on my team.

Its a sad state of affairs when your third preference sucks...
