Difficult question... I think most of the managers are trying to find out by try and error.
For what I have seen so far (but it's just my personal opinion):
- Strictly follow depth chart. The coach will not use the reserves, unless starters or backups are injured or out for 6 fouls.
- Coach picks from depth chart. The positions are respected and the starters will play longer than the backups (not quite sure, can anyone confirm?)
- Let coach decide. The best players (at each moment) will play and your starter might be on the court for only 10min. Does the trainer level have any influence here?

Let coach decide is not good if you want to have any control on how many minutes the players will play in the game (for training purposes).

I've never played SFDC, so can't confirm or deny this.

I play CPDC almost exclusively. My starters tend to get around 32-42 minutes/game, with the occasional exception of foul trouble to a starter causing the backup to play more.

This is pretty accurate from my experience.
edit: To my knowledge, trainer level has absolutely no effect on what the coach does. Every team has the same level coach, but teams can choose different trainer levels.

Not true at all.

It means instead of using your depth chart as a suggestion, the coach will follow your depth chart more closely.

My idea is that for a given position, with Strictly follow depth chart the coach is imposed to use the starter the most and the reserve the least.
Is this not true?

I had my best C as reserve, with my starter with atrocious stamina and the backup with pitiful stamina... well, the reserve (with strong stamina) did not get to play a single minute (he needed 4 to reach 48). I probably over-interpret this.

I use SFDC in pretty much every League game. and my starters generally get 35 minutes a game.
