I saw a transfer listed player with Atrocious FT shooting who was 0 for 43 lifetime from the line, so I doubt FT shooting is entirely independent of the player's rating.

It definitely matters. When I started, my team was terrible at free throws, and after just one pop on all my guys, my percentage went up something like 10%. However, I think experience factors in to free throws (if it's a big shot, they might get nervous), so maybe that's what you're experiencing if the misses are all late in games.

One Spanish manager made this contribution to the community, he made a study looking at hundreds of FT....

From 0 to....
Atrocious = 8,9%
Pitiful = 22,5%
Awful = 35,1%
Inept = 45,6%
Mediocre =54,2%
Average = 62,1%
Respectable = 69,8%
Strong = 74,2%
Proficient = 77,9%

...
Legendary =should be between 96% y 99,9%.
