I have to admit I have not thought this completely through, but what about taking away enthusiasm all together and assigning each team, per game an enthusiasm level between a specific range?
We have all read about how great teams can TIE all the way through the year knowing they are going to win anyway. Losing teams can do the same in the hopes of slamming a specific team during the year. To be more realistic however (THIS IS REAL BASKETBALL DAMMIT! I don't care what my girlfriend says!), maybe it should be more random.
For example (meaning not to be taken literally), lets say an enthusiasm level between 3-7 is given to each team for each game, at random. This is close enough to where the better team (as they should) will win their game even if they get a 3 and a significantly worse team gets a 7 that game. But...if the teams are close enough, the numbers are just far away enough to where we could see some upsets.
This takes away from a team struggling through the season, playoffs, sitting at a 5 enthusiasm ....only to meet up with the league's best team waiting to lay an enthusiasm of 13 on him!! Should the better team win? Sure. Should the other team have a small chance though ...sure. Big upsets in real basketball do happen all the time. It is taking away the ability of the better team to win 100% of the time by the loophole of enthusiasm. When I say better here...I mean significantly better as well.
Also, there is the case of showing what they were assigned that game. Should you or should you not? Well, we don't know exactly how "home court" advantage works do we? I am sure there is a hidden science to that right? Does it give 2 more enthusiasm points? 3? Or does it take away one from other team? We don't know, so why not make his ugly cousin, the enthusiasm, random too?
Would you show the random numbers assigned? or would you not? I would not personally.
In real life (YES IT IS REAL DAMMIT! I dont care what my girlfriend says!), you can't save up enthusiasm for a month, or take it easy like you can with BB. Some nights ...at random...your team is going to play a bit sluggish...and sometimes they will play better than the night before for some reason. But within a range seems more fair.
What are everyone's thoughts?
