its influenced by a lot of things, game shape, etc, but in general, it is understood to be a reflection of defensive capability as well as other things.

But its also retrospectively based around minutes played. A dude that only plays 20 mins in a game will get a higher rating than when he plays 30 minutes, and then again if he played 40 minutes.

So there you go! Learn something new every day!

I also think that this might make people lean towards keeping their rookies more. If there is an award that could increase merchandise they might push to try to get it and keep their rookies.

with this point i AGREE with trent and tom bane. the ROY award should be instituted. Though rookies in generally dont have great stats since they get less minutes, my friend Tom Bane made a great point that its the manager's decision if he wants his rookie to go for the ROY award and give him the opportunity to play.

Tom Bane also made a great point that for manager's to be motivated to play their rookies, the ROY awardee will give the team a boost in merchandise and attendance even if for the first 5 games of the following season, provided that the ROY is still with the team and didnt get sold in the ensuing off season.

See , Tom Bane, we agreed!

Thanks, abu!

I like this addition to the idea. It's a solid in game boost that helps your team in exchange for playing a rookie that might not be ready for prime time.

Yer actually im going to totally buck the trend as well and say that ROTY is probably not a bad idea and agree with both of u

the current MVP award can be easily manipulated if a user wants to eg: set patient offense all season and win enough games.

and I suppose there is the benefit of having motivatiin to play rookies.

But what about higher leagues like Div 1. Often these leagues will have ZERO rookies played in an entire season.

Most sports don't have rookie awards as such. Its a product of the way US sports recruit players. And although we have a draft, rookies in BB aren't as capable as rookies in US sports. So really I don't see much of a point in an award for players with skill levels in single figures.
I could maybe, and I stress maybe, be in favour of a young MVP award, perhaps for u21 players. Which would seem to be at least a bit more competitive than a ROY award.
Also, I really don't see having a ROY would in any way make rookies more attractive.

I think U21 could definitely work. Going U23 might get difficult because in lower divisions a lot of 23 year olds could be in the running for MVP as well. However that could make it more interesting depending on how you look at it.

I would say 6th man should be relatively easy to install once a limit to minutes is decided on.

oooooooooooooooooooooooo

good thinking!

i agree with you though, a lot of sports around the world do not have Rookie of the year. But they do have 'best new talent' or something similar.

I think some kind of U21 award would be alright. Young player of the season - Must be 21 or under during the season - that would be more competitive.

good thinking!

Just a small thing relating to this that I thought about at this point in the season is an all star game MVP I think that would be pretty cool and easy enough to put in the game.
