I did exactly this. Albeit, I used basketball acumen and experimentation at the beginning, but this has worked very well for me. 16-6 first season in D.III and 8-0 thus far this year.
Read the forums as if it were Tolstoy.
I never have any players near the top of the league for stats in any category, but I do have 6 guys in double figures for the season. Every brick must be strong if the wall is to hold.

In my personal opinion, just starting out in DIV, train guards. Teams with only guards starting out like that seem to beat teams with just inside players.
I trained guards starting out, and have been till the beginning of this season, yea could be why i'm still in DIII, but now that I have switched to inside training, My guards are superior to most DIII teams and alot of DII teams which will allow and hopefully maintain the winning as I sell decent inside players for much weaker, trainees.

Besides, your team was better overall than mine, when I was literally, a guard ONLY team and my guards were horrible then.. :(
