Pilipinas started strong scoring the first 4 points of the game, but China kept the score close. After obtaining an 8-6 lead, China responded with a 9-0 run. A three by Carreon closed the gap 15-19, but China responded with another 5-0 run to end the quarter 24-15. At the start of the second, China pushed the lead further with 3 made buckets from different players, but Pilipinas fought back with 3 field goals of their own. This continued for most of the quarter with Pilipinas keeping China’s lead to 3 points in the second. However, similar to the first quarter, China made a 10-3 run late in the quarter to extend the lead, but Siegfred Estillore
(38155755) managed to stop their run through a buzzerbeater from downtown. At the start of the third, Pilipinas U21 was short handed as big men Ace Julio Madrigal
(38155771) and Carreon sat with foul trouble. In light of this, Delco carried the load with 6 points early in the quarter. Behind Lin Fahai, China was able to extend the lead further. However, as Pilipinas starting big men went back into the game, they made a 6-0 run finally obtaining a 14-13 lead in the third quarter. Although Madrigal quickly picked up his fourth foul, Pilipinas was still able to put up a fight. Pilipinas was able to spark a 7-0 run late in the third forcing a timeout from China. After a few successful defensive possessions, the third quarter ended 72-61 China. In the fourth quarter however, the story was different. Determined to suck the life out of team Pilipinas, China opened the quarter with a 7-0 run playing strong defense. Pilipinas was finally able to get their first points in the quarter from two free throws by Delco. After playing strong defense throughout most of the quarter, China finally let up allowing Pilipinas to make another run to lead in the quarter 14-13. However, it was too late as Pilipinas was not able to cut the lead to single digits with the game ending 89-76.
Our next game will be next week against an undetermined opponent. Based on the result of today's game, we will most probably be in Pool E, against Taiwan, Singapore, Iran, India and Saudi Arabia.
