I personally like the idea of altered shots when SB comes into play. It does tie in with RL instances on the court.

However, SB remains more of an Inside skill rather than an Outside one. This is because when you are guarding someone on the outside, you tend to give him a bigger 'leash' or keep him a specific distance from you. The closer you get to the rim, the more this distance reduces and when you're under the basket, you're literally side by side. The shorter the leash is, the bigger impact SB will have on altering the shots.

I feel this brings another dimension to defences, and not dependent on one skill.

This is an interesting observation. Also, few players are double-teamed (trapping aside) on the outside -- where as you get closer to the basket, the chance of a double-teamed is much greater.

The honest crux of the issue is that Shotblocking needs an overhaul to correct the distribution and add the intuitive parts of the game that shotblocking creates. "Changing the shot" and Changing shot selection to account for the games big shot blockers.

The shot blocking skill can be useful.

Just look at the leading blocker in Slovakia. A $50k center. I know he plays against inferior centers all the time but a high blocking skill can lead to a high average of blocks per game.

but this is pretty rare, so that this numbers wasn't the result of his skill and the result of random when he making more then 1,5 per game - it is hard to see who you mean.

And for this 1,5 blocks the salary is extrem, so it is disadvantegeous to train it.

He averages 2,5 blocks per game but I think he has a lot of blocks due to playing against weaker centers than his high SB skill being useful.

All I wanted to say that SB isn't absolutely useless.

i know SB 13/14 Center swith around 1 Block per game ;) If you use Josef Ka formula they pay 15-60k Salary for this one block, so i don't believe thats make then stronger.

Blocks now aren't worth the salary increase they dish out.

I'm still all for the overhaul on a 'shot alteration' mechanism dependant on the distance from the basket.

I go to many NBA games, like maybe 15 a year, and I watch another 30 on TV. People get thier shots blocked all of the time and it doesnt mean they wont shoot anymore or they are scared. I saw Howard block Garnett pretty strong one game and Garnett went off after that, scoring 38 points with 16 boards.

Imagine the uproar and complaints of people training inside players when SB is made more relevant. OMG will people cry

Because we are discussing it a lot in the season 10 thread, maybe we should better resurect this one ;)

Even without seeing the full effect of the new change the blocking numbers, doesn't seem to legimate the high salary you pay for this skill.

So i try to outline possible solutions, well knowing that they all ain't perfect:

1. Reducing salary + potential influence:

Maybe the easiest way to fix it, without punishing players for abdicate the blocking skill. The disadvantage of this, that we have still a useless skill and also a useless training which could mislead players to train it with the hope that it has an effect besides the small amount of blocks.

2. Merge it with inside Defence

Blocking is also in RL a part of the defence under the basket, so we could give a bonus on the inside Defence additional to the small effect on the blocks. The bad side it, that we will have to skills, for the same propose and a taff decision about the balanced.
Maybe you have other idea's to bring Blocking into account, without merging the skills?

3. Shot Blockers avoiding shots near to the basket

You will get less shot near the basket against a shot blocker, but maybe Steve Karenn could explain that more in detail.
