Game 5 – Chelsea Seagulls 85 defeat Slam ! 84

After two blow-out games, we then travel to the Stronghold for what may be the game of the round. The bigs banged it out all night, with the brutes bustling and bruising to the entertainment of all. Slam ! got off to a good start. Led by Luszcynski, Slam ! was up by four after the first period. Neither team could make a real in-road in the second period, before a Lawrance-led Seagulls managed to pull a single point ahead at the end of the third period. The game opened up in the fourth, with 52 pts being added to the scoreboard, but with both teams contributing 26pts to this total the one point three quarter lead of the Seagulls was enough to give them the win.

Votes
3 – Gary Lawrance (Chelsea Seagulls) 31pts, 17rbds
2 – Olli Krentschker (Chelsea Seagulls) 23pts, 11rbds
1 – Razvan Muresan (Slam !) 21pts, 19rbds

Australian national team PF, Gary Lawrance wins the battle of the keyways, which is not surprising considering he looks like a mob enforcer. Krentschker and Muresan were hugely entertaining, and these votes could have gone either way, until…
4 0:18 85 — 84 O. Krentschker (A) fires an off-balance jumper from the wing under pressure from C. Delgadillo (H). Scored.
4 0:02 85 — 84 R. Muresan (H) glides to the hoop and tries to finish off the glass with O. Krentschker (A) right in his face. Shot missed.

4 0:02 85 — 84 R. Muresan (H) cleans the offensive glass.

4 0:00 85 — 84 R. Muresan (H) reaches up and tries to tip it in, guarded closely by O. Krentschker (A). Shot missed.

4 0:00 85 — 84 End of period

Krentschker wins for 2 votes, Muresan gets the single vote.

Game 6 – Guanzheng Goldfish 162 defeat Moorditj Magick 128

If there is one classic Calamari Vs Calamari style of game, it is a mutual Run and Gun/Full Court Press. In the early seasons, it would have been the Seagulls Vs Goldfish, Duricko Vs Guanzheng. Today, it is still the Goldfish, but we now see the Magick stepping up for this basketball’s version of the splash and dash 50m freestyle. From almost 240 FG attempts, nearly 300pts were scored in this game, with over 50 steals in this game. Fans were just glad that the administrators at the The Tavern had prepared a physio suite for fans leaving the game to get treatment for the sore necks caused by the constant back and forth of the game.

Votes
3 – Virgil Wang (Guanzheng Goldfish) 37pts, 8asts, 7stls
2 – Will Johnson (Guanzheng Goldfish) 37pts, 10asts, 6stls
1 – Xie Guanzheng (Guanzheng Goldfish) 34pts, 6asts

The Magick were just not up to the tempo and the shooting of Wang, Johnson and Guanzheng. Wang with least turnovers, edges out Johnson with the most assists, and 1 vote to the Master Chef.

As mllama has volunteered to take on this week I will pass it over to him, which means I will now have to go and mow the lawn.

Fine Fine

WEEK 3 VOTES

Slam ! defeated TeamAkuma 108-87

Given that Slam ! was expected to win comfortably, Akuma took a risk and threw out the 2-3 zone. It didn't pay off, as Slam ! played outside and tore the Akuma defense to pieces. Slam ! dominated the second quarter, and this game was over by half time.

Votes:

3: Luo Zheng Qui (Slam) Zheng Qui played a sensational game, scoring 38 points, including 5 threes, on just 24 shots. Given that Qui is now transfer listed, perhaps Slam was just advertising him by playing outside? It also makes his 3 votes rather irrelevant if he sells. But whatever.

2: Razvan Muresan (Slam) Muresan has been dominating for Slam this season playing inside. But he showed he can also feature in an outside offense. He scored 18 points and 14 boards.

1: Avery Maclean (Akuma): Maclean did the job, when his morely highly paid teammates (ie Smeltz) couldn't. Perhaps a little wasteful with his shooting, but 29 points against an ABBL team can't be ignored.

PS: Kuande doesn't get votes because most of his points came in junktime, and his team actually lost while he was on the court.

PPS: Smeltz sucks.

Western Titans defeated Moorditj Magick (87-62)

The Titans spent the first quarter trying to figure out how to spell the Magick's name (where the heck does the 'j' come from? How do you pronounce that? And why the **** is there a k on the end of Magic? Argh!). Once they woke up, they romped to a comfortable victory, with the big men getting the job done inside. Defense was the order of the game though, with the Magick failing to score more than 20 points in each quarter.

Votes:

3: Roman Muggleton (WT): After a little bit of research it appears as if Muggleton was defending Rodriguez (see, I do my research). And since defense won this game, and Rodriguez took all of (or close enough to) the Magick's shots, Muggleton gets the 3 votes. The 21 points on top of that is a handy bonus.

2: Uditi Samdup (WT): As his ex U21 coach, I'm obliged to give him votes. Plus he dominated Boljuncic (for the record, a name as difficult to spell and pronounce as his team's), keeping him to just 10 points while putting up 21 of his own, and adding 15 boards.

1: Bento Filho (WT): Bento scored 16 points and pulled down 14 boards. And he has a cool name. So he gets a vote.

Week 3 - Lewisham Wombats defeated Koopasaurus (120-107)

The KoopaTroopers tried their hardest, but couldn't get the job done against the mighty magnificence that is this Wombat's team. Everyone should just take note and tank against the Wombats now. In the cup, league and private league. That includes you, Whitebeard.

Votes:

3: Antonio Manfrotto (Wombats): Manfrotto is my best chance for the MVP, and I'm the one doing the votes. 3 votes, Manfrotto.

2: Avner Fishenzon (Koop): I imagine all the fish jokes have been done. So I'll leave them aside. Avner almost got a triple double, falling just one assist short. I expect it is unlikely that the Khan family will receive a Christmas card from the Fishenzon family this year. One because he is Isreali, so probably doesn't even celebrate Christmas. And two because of this:

4 0:55 104 — 117

A. Fishenzon (A) gets off a great pass to R. Khan (A). R. Khan (A) attempts a three-point shot from the wing. Shot missed.

1: Hahi bin Awang (Wombats): The facilitator of the Wombat's offense racked up another 9 assists, to go with 16 points, to add a vote to his collection.

Sidenote: Yes, the real reason Manfrotto got 3 votes is because he completely frickin' dominated, scoring 40 points on just 19 shots. But I thought the other reason sounded better.

Urmummas defeated Black Label Society (117-103)

With the Society's top big man out, and him not having much of a big man division to start with, this wasn't expected to be much of a contest. Steeler and Chmelar battled manfully to try to hold the Society together inside, but in the end, class shone through. Rebounding was the difference in this game, with Urmummas picking up 15 offensive boards, while conceding just 2.

3: Sun Cunming (Urmummas). The big Sun has been a little subdued this season, but he shone brightly this game. 28 points and 28 boards easily secured him the 3 votes.

2. Shaun McArthur (BLS) Shaun Mac had an outstanding game, and actually wasn't that far from picking up the 3 votes. he notched up 35 points, 8 boards and 6 assists, and kept Vahi (relatively) quiet.

1. Eido Blum (Urmummas) Really close call between Blum and Phung, but I've gone with Blum due to him shutting down Howarth - a key to beating the Society. He also chipped in with 29 points.

Chelsea Seagulls defeated Guanzheng Goldfish (118-85)

It seems that having a team named after you gives you the right to jack up endless threes. Xie "I can shoot 19 three pointers and miss most of them" Guanzheng certaintly didn't help his side win the game last night. That said, the Goldfish were outclassed all over the court, and saw their 2-3 zone busted open by the Seagull's bigs.

3. Oli Krentchker (CS). 2-3 zone? What 2-3 zone. Krentchker scored 39 points on 16-21 shooting, to take the lead in the fishbowl west's scoring title.

2. Marko "The Sperminator" Sperbert. (CS) The Sperminator (as I have now dubbed him) covered Wang all night, and probably just took home the points. 26 points, 4 boards and 5 assists is a solid return.

1. Gary Lawrence (CS) With Krentchker dominating, Lawrence didn't get much oppotunity to shoot. But when he did, he did so efficently, scoring 17 points on 6-9 shooting.

Cumunga defeated Baxter Bogans (99-85)

This match ebbed and flowed. Cumunga shot out to a hot start, before the Bogans pulled them back in the second quarter. Chumunga put the foot down in the third quarter, and from there it was game over. Baxter did a good job on the boards, but poor shooting and turnovers cost them dearly. No real standouts in this game, so difficult votes.

3. Alexey Berestetskiy (Cum) Alexey is a good reason why, if I ever do votes again, I'm not awarding votes to anyone with more than 3 sylables in their name. However, he deserved the three, with 20 points and 16 boards a solid night.

2. Glen Tidwell (Cum) Tidwell did a good job all night getting the ball inside to the bigs, 8 assists. He also scored 19 points himself.

1. Davis Mercado Bogan deserve a vote in this game, and Mercado was their best player. Though I feel dirty giving a vote to a Canadian. Davis scored 22 points to pick up the vote.

Krentchker has taken the outright lead, but has a group of three big men right on his hammer. Very much a big man award at this point, with McArthur the only small among the top 6.

Week Four

Urmummas vs. Lewisham Wombats 95 - 97 (52065190)

We start with the game of the round, new ABBL team Urmummas is having a massive impace everywhere and even taking it to ABBL royalty the Wombats. Urmummas had the ball with 16 seconds to go and two down but Théo Cougnaud threw the ball away. They had to foul, Awang made the free throws but it wasn't over as Eido Blum was single-handedly keeping Urmummas in the game. He hit a deep three, "E. Blum (A) is on fire! that's 5 in a row!". Foul again, Awang missed one giving Blum one last chance to be the hero.

4 0:00 95 — 97 J. Svilpis (A) gets off a great pass to E. Blum (A). E. Blum (A) tries a driving layup. Shot missed.
End of period.

3 Antonio Manfrotto Lewisham Wombats 28 PTS 16 REB. Great effort from the 'Fro who had to go up against Sun Cunming who is no slouch and fouled him out.

2 Eido Blum Urmummas 31 PTS. Make that last layup and he gets 3 votes but chokers can't be the MVP.

1 Sun Cunming Urmummas 15 PTS 19 REB. This last one was a coin toss, Awang, Laumianskas and others all had an argument for the last point but an efficient 7/10 shooting and a game high in rebounds got him home.

Chumunga vs. Black Label Society 90 - 104 (52065192)

Two Big 8 ABBL rivals having a classic inside against outside match. In this case the outside shooting from three point range was a major factor (6/18 against a pathetic 0/13) as well as the extra 10 points BLS got from the free throw line. Dissapointing effort from $4.2 million man Gerd Jahe who was outplayed by Du Phùng.

3 Shaun McArthur Black Label Society 20 PTS 8 AST 4 REB. Offence was solid as always but keeping $102k Glen Tidwell to 0/10 shooting was key.

2 Du Phùng Black Label Society 21 PTS 7 REB. Shot well 9/15 and 4 steals was icing on the cake.

1 Nigel Cubby Chumunga 24 PTS 12/13 FGS. Could have been the champ, but fouling out in 21 minutes made him the chump and a lot of the blame for this loss goes to the Chubster.

TeamAkuma vs. Guanzheng Goldfish 84 - 94 (52065189)

Two original Fishbowlers going head to head and the first time since the early days that they are in the same division. The Goldfish again went for the 2/3 zone and this time it was very effective keeping Smeltz to 6/15 and Vargas to a pathetic 2/7. TeamAkuma still won the boards despite the 2/3 zone and had a massive 37 free throws but just couldn't convert from the field.

It seems that having a team named after you gives you the right to jack up endless threes. Xie "I can shoot 19 three pointers and miss most of them" Guanzheng certaintly didn't help his side. - mllama

3 Xie Guanzheng Guanzheng Goldfish 40 PTS. It seems someone read last weeks review and took it personally. He only took 18 3s this week but made an amazing 10 of them despite facing the usual 3-2 zone. Jacking up endless 3s is actually quite a good think if you hit more than half of them.

2 Clinton Abimbola TeamAkuma I can't blame Xie's outburst on "The Prodigy" because he hwas just one part of the zone, but he ertainly loved shooting over the Fishy 2/3 zone.

1 Ky Smeltz TeamAkuma It is like old times again, Xie vs Smeltz. The other player in this game that had an entire team named after him. Ah the memories this brings back. I probably would have had to have given Smeltz 1 point regardless of his performance but with 20 PTS and 21 REB no-one can complain.
