Worst time to buy a starter is right before the playoffs.

Sometimes.
Yes, the player will sell for more because there are more people looking to buy.
But, when you buy for cheaper earlier, you have to pay for extra weeks of salary.

Example: Player X sells for $1.5 million the week before playoffs. You pay 1 week salary @ 150k. His GS drops to 7 with the buy.
Player Y with similar skills sells for $1.2 million the 3 weeks before playoffs. Savings of 300k. You pay 3 weeks salary = 450k. Overall you lose 150k. But his GS will be 8-9.

If the difference between the 2 selling prices or the player's salary is more/less of an issue (balanced SF vs primary monster C), then 1 will be preferred over the other. It all depends on what you choose to do and is one of the things this GM game makes you choose.

If you remember me, then I don't care if everyone else forgets.

I agree that is the risk involved. Buying right before playoff time can be useful to ensure a title.
However, if the player addition will help lead to HCA, it can be an asset too. Also, winning more league games for ticket sales, etc.

There was a guy I wanted really bad last season. Sold for $125,000 around 1 week after all-star break. Sold for $255,000 right before playoffs. Had a $25,000 salary.

IMO in most cases the holding cost is close to the difference in sales price. But I would agree with you it really depends on the situation.

Overall its a great time to sell though if you don't need the player
