Both final relegation games went poorly, with Traptors getting blown out, and Annhilators (III.12) losing a close one.
That means no II autopromotion... and down to at most 2 spots for IV teams.

Summary of the two teams to pay attention to:
Toronto Traptors (NBBA) - BOT demoting [1 spot for III+ if not replaced with a new team before season's end]
Marseillus (II.1) - still no login since 1/1... demoting [1 spot for IV+ if no login\early replacement]

IV order (max 2 autopromote slots):
1: 22-0 (+1389) Cyborgs {III.34} in finals, W game 1
2: 22-0 (+1318) Houston Legends {III.39} in finals, W game 1
3: 22-0 (+1269) Da Legends {III.9} in finals, W game 1
4: 22-0 (+1267) Junkyard Dogs {III.46} in finals, W game 1
5: 22-0 (+1067) Hardmoney Outlaws {III.57} in finals, LOST game 1
6: 22-0 (+996) Curly Fries {III.31} in finals, W game 1
7: 22-0 (+931) Red Bulls 1268 {III.24} in finals, W game 1
8: 22-0 (+889) Arstotzka BC {III.54} L (r2)
9: 22-0 (+826) Bellevue Blackhawks {III.33} in finals, LOST game 1
10: 22-0 (+807) Grand Ma Mas {III.16} L (r2)

III order (max 1 autopromote slot):
1: 22-0 (+754) Mars Aliens {III.14} in finals, game 1
2: 22-0 (+716) Chicken Hawks {III.6} in finals, W game 1
3: 22-0 (+691) Ice Man {III.5} in finals, W game 1
4: 22-0 (+614) Orlando Tragic {III.7} in finals, W game 1
5: 21-1 (+698) Philadelphia Phantasm {III.4} in finals, LOST game 1
6: 21-1 (+561) Illinois Riveters {III.8} in finals, W game 1
7: 20-2 (+661) Work in Progress {III.12} in finals, W game 1
8: 20-2 (+626) Pyramid of Success {III.9} in finals, W game 1
9: 20-2 (+576) Lawrence Lancers {III.9} in finals, LOST game 1

A new player can not take over a team in the NBBA, only II or lower, so the Traptors' replacement won't stay in II that way.

So you are saying that spot will definitely remain available for autopromotion for III and IV then? Good to know for some folks :-)

I'm a little surprised a team can jump straight into II even... many teams have been around 20+ seasons trying to make it there. But glad to know that there's no NBBA shortcut. Thanks for your info!

Yeah, sometime late in the season a few seasons back Marin changed it so teams signing up have the option to choose high, medium or low level when they start; they never can start in I, but definitely they can in II (saw one come into II.4 when I was there).

But why...knowing next to nothing about the game, of course you would want to start at a high level, right? Starting in II basically sentences a new team to multiple seasons of very few wins, probably not the best way to get people to stick around.

I don't know. I presume that the users are warned that choosing a high league level will make things harder, though I don't know how strongly that is emphasized. Not sure I agree with the idea either, but they don't give me those shiny GM $0 bills for my opinion. ;)

I was in that league with Hrudey, & raised the same question. Think that at least one of the replacement teams was someone who used to play BB, quit, then decided to come back. (but could be wrong, it's been a while). So they weren't actually new IIRC.

But yeah, starting in D2 seems like a truly terrible idea for new users.

Yes, but it happened late enough that we'll have to wait until the start of the season after next to replace his team.

As I recall, the option to choose the level you start at was largely implemented so that in the smaller countries a person could choose to start in Div4 or Div3 rather than being forced to start in Div2 because it was the lowest one with human players. It is largely a side effect that in the larger counties it also means new players can start in Div2 or Div3 if there happen to be openings when they sign-up rather than starting in the lowest Div with human players, which used to be where all new teams were placed.

That said, I can't imaging a new team not being relegated from Div 2 in a large country unless they somehow managed to take over a team which had already locked up a top 5 conference position. So they will demote at the end of their first partial season; quite possibly also demoting from D3 at the end of the next season. The biggest impact might just be on preventing non-champion teams from lower divisions being promoted as part of bot-cleanup. As someone who has always felt that wasn't a way I'd want to advance myself, I actually see that as a positive effect.
