RedZoneAction (redzoneaction.org) is the best american football game out there. It is a lot like BB except training doesn't take forever and the draftees are actually good. Plus, it is a lot easier to get good fast if you are active

I think Basketball GM http://www.basketball-gm.com is a great game. It's more of an NBA type manager game than BB. You play at your own pace which is nice because you can get into it really fast and play as much as you want.

Also Big Win basketball is a really fun game. It actually has a live action game viewer which I find really impressive.

In both the training once a week, one league match, a friendly match plus one cup match per week. It does not take a lot of time and continues to enjoy it. And it's easy even for novices.
