Its about statistics and probabilities. A team losing at the last few minutes of a game by a manageable margin will foul to get possession back. In non-blowout games, around a third of the free throws taken occur in the last few minutes. Statistically, the more free throw is given to a player - the more chances to miss.

In the example given by the original poster, it may be possible that the stronger FT shooter had to take his free throws in the "last few minutes" scenario - where in real life the pressure/stress is much more particularly for an away team.

also don't forget that the last few minutes of a game, players tend to be the most tired, and tiredness, as pointed out before, can lead to missing free throws.

Except engine tries (or it is stated it should try at least) to send good free throwers on court in final minutes if leading. Not necessarily players who played a lot in that game so far.

Well I didn't exactly made a scientific study of it, but from what I have seen, this isn't always working that well.

Inded it is better then before, where the coach just put in the best players, regardless of their FT skill. But I can't say that my coach is putting in my best 3-point shooters when behind (or best FT shooters when leading).

But in the end the fatigue factor is only part of it.

I know that in my last game my starting PG, who had many more minutes, but hasn't realy much better FT skill (level 12, while my back-up has level 13), and far less experience then my back up stayed in the game and missed 2 important free throws after a foul (yes even at level 12 ;) ).
Luckely I still won by 2 points, but according to the theory of putting in the best options for the FTs, my back up should have hit the field... and he didn't.

So that's not always optimally working.

Besides, your team DOES need defense to try to stop those 3 pointer. ;)

That's why i wrote that it should try to (according to news if i remember correctly). It would be dumb if engine would just put there best 5 free throw shooters - ft skill is not the only things that matters, you could end up with very bad lineup this way. I can confirm that engine cares about ft in final minutes from my experience. But again it depends on how balanced team you have and there are many things that could be considered if some player is subbed in (I avoided the term back up for a reason). I'm not sure if a difference of one level in ft skill is that much to be considered against other things and even with all other things being equal against your lineup pattern. And since there is only team training for free throws you can't get your worse free throw shooters to catch up with the better ones, so if ft thing would greatly prevail in substitutions patterns in final minutes it could bring difficulties for some teams, so I would be cautious in rooting for ft substitutions dominance, slight preference is good, more is questionable depending on how the GE actually really lokk like.

It depends on situation, nobody said we are talking about last possession. If it would be plain simple 5 best ft shooters you could end up with 5 guards and nobody under the basket which would meant giving afree basket to opposite team in their next attack (and no you can't switch to another lineup every time, no foul or turnover can occur or other things). Teams tend to get a good ft shooter on floor to (try to) pass him the ball in case of deliberate foul would occur. Position still matters (a bit).

If you turn the ball over in a situation where the other team has to foul you, you suck.

Besides, since a proper execution of that play results in you getting to the line, you can indeed sub in and out each time.
