Stamina hasn't been mentioned, as a factor for this occuring from time to time.
The stamina of all parties involved, the injured player, his sub and their counterpart.
I've witnessed many times when someone got injured that his sub(and the team in all) played pretty well for at least the first minutes after the substitution.

I think that it depends on the tactics, in my case I tried to play on my veteran player who is the only guy with somewhat skills, to beat my opponent. But since the guy got injured I lacked scoring in final quarter and lost the game. I guess I would've been able to pull this off, if the injury would've not happened.

Also the guy is best passer in my team, so the flow was gone after he was subbed.

In those 5 minutes the stamina effect might be great enough to counteract the difference in quality. I wouldn't count on this as a feature though.
