See what their plans are. Give them advice. Tell them how much the prospect would potentially sell for. Just put all the cards on the table, and if the manager wants to sell then great. If he wants to keep him and train him, then great. You never want to force a manager to sell, or give ultimatums about his prospect and the U21. Be honest, and see what happens. I'm always a fan of properly teaching a new/inexperienced manager how to train a guy. I've been doing it for almost 20 seasons now. Just this morning Stuart Vereker's manager contacted me. He was a new guy with an awesome trainee that he needed help training. I gave him advice, and he trained him into a monster that is dominating D.II. He wanted my input on how I would train his new trainee. I'm going to give him my .02 and see if he can make another beast. If I told him to sell then his team may not be where it is, and he may not have stuck around as long as he did. I know if I wasn't gifted into an awesome trainee when I started(Dan Gardner!) I may not have stuck around.

The manager came to me since he was frustrated with the responses he had received yet about Vereker's future prospects with the NT, so I gave him this build; one that, with proper GS, would make it very hard to turn down.

I won't give away his current skills, but he has followed that mold I gave and then some.

So my question is this. Would you as a manager try to convince the inexperienced managers to sell their American Badasses to experienced managers like myself (with millions in the bank) who are looking for u21 prospects or would you try to teach them how to train their players correctly?

As oriolekid has touched on, it is ultimately up to the manager. Personally I would always love to see people train their own guys. I myself have never been fortunate enough to land anyone that fell into my training program. I'd also like to elaborate on another point made in an excellent response by oriolekid. Managers become attached to their trainees. If we can get more new managers training their own guys, they will stick around. This would lead to a larger base of American managers, which in the end is nothing but a tremendous advantage at the national stage.

Although there are going to be instances where a manager would benefit more by listing his trainee. There are a number of situations where the money would come in more handy in the early stages of a career.

Whatever the manager were to decide, we will be there to assist him in any way he may need.

Well Dross it's hard to say at this juncture what I would have done then. A proper response to a question this acute would have required me to be in the moment.

In hindsight it's easy to agree with Ken Simons that II/MM would have been the right call. I can say with certainty that we would not have been in a 3-2.

There would have been a scheduled symposium for trusted managers to voice their opinions. Here I would have taken what information I could have from the most experienced players and made a decision based on the information we had at hand.

You start the thread, you talk through plans, lineups, and tactics, but it's your call at the end. A lot of times what you throw out on Monday is in line with what the majority of managers on the off-site think is best, but sometimes it isn't. You should never yield to their demands and wishes though if you feel strongly about something though. You were elected, not them.

I don't think you can every give a manager advice that hurts their team. Managers have to want to train players voluntarily for U21. If they want to take them on a path that is different from U21 then it is our best interest as a community to help them achieve their goals. Just because they are not experienced does not mean they cant train a U21 player. Every experienced manager had to start somewhere.

My first year as U21 manager a player drafted a really good HOF big that they wanted to train. Obviously it would have been in my selfish interest to have them just pound on primaries for U21 but they would have ended up with a worse player in the long run if they didn't train secondaries. It's better for America to teach these players how to train correctly and you have an owner that you have built a relationship that will be a valuable asset in training players in the future. This manager actually just promoted to DIII this season and is very active in the game chat. He loves to mentor other players. Helping him with training benefits the community even more because he is passing on my knowledge to other managers.

I always tell USA owners to join the offsite and post a club training diary so the whole community can give them advice and feedback. I believe that scouting should be more mentoring then just giving them a training plan that they have follow. You want them to understand the elastic effect and how to train the fastest way possible. Why you are training certain skills in a certain order. Why getting at least an advanced trainer and getting 48+ minutes a week is important. Why single position training for most skills is the best way to train. Show guys how to not only get 48+ minutes a week but making sure that they are managing their minutes properly to get the best GS possible on their guys so that they can train and compete in their league. Suggest tactics that fit their team and their training schedule.

If training does not interest them, telling them they can make some nice money selling a young 18 year old prospect usually does interest them especially if they are not going to maximize the talent of the prospect and thus hurt the value of the team.

Because of the fact that the U21 ads that show up on players are based on salary, I get a lot of bbmails nearly every day from managers and I try to give them the best advice possible even if they have a star or allstar player that does not have a chance for U21 because of their low potential.

I would like to know the definition of the term "basically" in this statement.
