I actually spent the last hour reading this entire post, and therefore by enduring the agony I get to throw in my two cents (tax it at will)
Someone spoke of competition at an international level. This doesnt have a whole lot to do with money except in the level of trainer. You cant buy National players, only train yes? Therefore larger team bases will be more likely to produce international winners. Like in the real world.
Other than this, what does it matter if the top team in Andorra has more money than the top team in Italy? I mean really (pride is not a valid response). Someone suggested that we all compete on the TL. Yes, we do, and that cash flows in both directions. Maybe you will get lucky and have some Andorran overbid on YOUR transfer. Not such a bad deal now is it? How many Andorran juggernauts are there flooding the market?
Building an arena is an actual strategy, and if you didnt use it when you had the chance and are falling behind, so be it. No teams spot is 'saved' for them in thier series. If you must relegate to Div II to build your arena, and it is tough to get back to DI I say A) so what, enjoy the competition in DII and the challenge of getting back up. If you are good enough you will make it, right? and B)Perhaps time to rethink the old strategy? Adapt and overcome?
I am a late comer to the game and sorry for it. The guys who have been playing since the biggining should have an edge over me. I will be more than miffed if some new team who starts in season 15 gets bumped up to my level just to even the playing field. I came late, and I have some catching up to do. I am going to enjoy the challenge and the competition wherever I am at the moment. And yes I want to win. Bad.
Game right?
Edit: And to respond to the original poster and the original topic, I agree, free agents arent really needed.
