I remember being interested in it and especially as I had read a book about it only about a year before I went. However at the time it was VERY difficult to get to. Ranked #93 of things to do in Iran by Lonely Planet travellers so it must be possible now. However this was part of the current getting there description:
However, the castle of Alamut, one of the most famous of all, is nowaday more or less accessible by 4wd in dry weather, if one can find a guide or driver in Qazvin willing and able to take you there.
Even getting to Qazvin wasn't so easy back when I visited.
