Here are three issues I think a lot of people complain about when the results come out (despite the ratings being reasonably accurate).
1. Player is 19 yo.
2. Player may have X star skills and Y stars potential, but he has a bad configuration.
3. Player missing a necessary skill.
As for (1), you might consider rating 18 yo in front of unknowns.
For (2), I'm not sure what the answer is. A couple seasons ago I drafted a PF with good inside skills and potential, but he was 6' 3". He was a decent SF for me for a limited time and I sold him for a decent sum, but was never a high-value trainee because of his height.
(3) You draft a 7' 1" Center with Inside Shot, Rebounding and Shot Blocking but atrocious or pitiful Inside Defense. Kind of kills his market value, as most people aren't going to put the effort in to raise his Defense to something worthwhile.
