I did read carefully. How's this for well rounded? 13/9/12/12/14/12-15/15/14/12? Sure, he's only 128 TSP. However, if you're looking for 140+ TSP, then I'd agree you need a level 7 trainer and an 18 year old trainee with 65+ starting TSP.
It really comes down to what kind of player the OP wants to train. To make an elite NT Guard or Big, then he probably needs HoF potential. If he wants to make an SF, then yes, Superstar or MVP is more than enough. Also, if he wants to train to sell, then Allstar/PA is probably plenty. If he wants to train a good NBBA/D II player, then Superstar to MVP is probably fine too. For most of these players, a level 5 trainer is probably fine. I just commented that I've had success with a level 6. If he's just looking to cap an Allstar or PA player, he can probably get away with a level 4.
From his OP, it seems that he wants to get some truly elite players. If he's looking for SFs, go with MVP. If you want to make an elite guard or big, you might need an HoF. You really need to look at a training and potential calculator to figure it out. Depending on his final build goal, he can probably get away with something less than HoF.
edit: you're probably right that he should wait to buy a trainer. I don't really track the staff market too intensely, but I've found guys for cheap after the allstar break towards the start of playoffs
