And what is the "actual market value" you speak of? I always wondered how GMs decide that a purchase has been made above "actual market value", if one lists the guy for $4m and someone else bids on him.
What if someone lists a guy for $10m and someone else bids on him? Or if someone lists a player at $1 and someone bids him up to $10M? Or $20M?
Basically, there are amounts that would be undoubtedly above the market value for a player, even if the purchaser is in no way connected with the seller (as occasionally happens with teams who are quitting and just overbid on players for whatever reasons they feel like). And if it can be established that a specific amount is above a fair market value, then it follows that at some point there is a reasonable market value, and that's a matter of judgment that our helpful and informed GMs (or occasionally, truculent ignorant ones like myself) have to ascertain.
