I am not sure but I assume the following:

Losing by a big margin in the first playoff round will give you a bad fan survey in the "played good last league game" and "played good in the last TV-game", whereas finishing fifth will give you only a small minus compared to reaching the playoffs.

Next assumption:
I pay around 400k in salaries in Div II and make almost the same amount through ticket sales. If my opponent is much better than me and has almost the same income from his stadium a loss in the first round will make me ~130k - thats really a low sum compared to the 400k I could save by finishing fifth.

Solution: Pay the teams a bonus for reaching the playoffs, so that a loss in the first round is still financially more attractive than a free week as fifth (btw. every team has to do some stamina or FT training, so this one game is not a huge loss)

And that doesn't matter at all since you won't be playing any paying game until the reset.

This is madness.

Currently, at least in my case (II division in Italy), this is the situation:

- if you finish first in your conference and win the first playoff game, it's better than finishing fifth
- if you finish second, third, or fourth, and manage to qualify for the finals, it's better than finishing fifth
- in every other case, it's better to finish fifth

As a matter of fact, if you end up third or fourth and are able to reach the final, but lose 2-0, it still isn't economocally worth it if you played the first two rounds away from home. However, the chance to play in the final would probably outweigh the economic loss.

Still, having a system in which it's economically preferable to finish fifth rather than second in most cases doesn't seem all that great.

This favors buying monsters for playoff with no fear of having to pay that huge salary when you accidentally lose. If those kind of player transfers do not get regulated, then this change is worse than the previous system. Now no planning is needed (you don't have to plan for 14 weeks of salarys). I hope we are not moving in the direction of making this game easy.

Honestly, I am in D.5, so it probably does not matter much now, as I am the fourth seed, but the first seed gets about double the attendance revenue over my salaries. However, in higher divisions, when teams have like $600 k salaries and $300k attendance, a 4 seed would lose money even if they won the championship in 3 games, while a 5 seed would save money. Something has to be done so the 4 seed is better than the 5 economically, so the giant flaws of this system go away.

I have to disagree with the fan survey comments...making the playoffs doesn't guarantee you a better fan survey..
4 seasons ago I finished in 5th by winning my last game against my rival..following that game I had three weeks of very nice fan surveys....the next season I finish in 4th and get crushed by that seasons BB3 champs( Sharman) and let me tell you...I had complete shite fan surveys for three weeks...
It's kind of funny with all the flaws in this game and they go and fix something that wasn't broken.
In fact without paying salaries during the offseason it is going to make the day traders come out in force, they can now buy players and hold on to them without paying the salaries...
The biggest joke in the game was the daytrading and now it just got easier..Thanks BB's..I wonder if I will renew my Supporter in March...

Not a big fan of the 5 seeds possibly/probably earning more money than some playoff teams. Why don't the two 5 seeds just get 2 additional automated scrimmages with each other, splitting the revenue and eliminating the variables of the proposed new system? That way they get a reasonable sum of money but no more than any playoff teams. The logistics and structuring may not be there but it's more fair.

edit: well, I forgot that the first playoff game is do or die and it's only a 1 game playoff schedule for losers. Meh. I'd still probably prefer it.

What about trading? If you allow people not to pay salaries, then it will be easier to buy every kind of player during the offseason at low prices and then to sell them just before the new season's beginning. Rebuild their teams will become easier than it should be.
Thanks

Why not wipe out the cash for the relegation series between 6th and 7th teams. 5th through 8th immediately stop paying salaries once the regular season ends. Then to address the 3rd and 4th place teams, make an ammendment to the new CBA by paying salaries only as long as your team is still alive. i.e. Fourth place team plays on Tuesday, gets smoked and is now out of the playoffs. They would pay their players for one game that week, or half of their salaries, then go into offseason mode paying no more in salaries. You only pay as far as you go in the playoffs and on a per game basis. The 6th and 7th place relegation series get no cash for the game but are playing a meaningful friendly for the right to stay up in their league.

with all the other aspects brought up, I consider this change the biggest dismprovment possible.

There could have been dozens of other easy ways to fix the fifth place issue without worsening the other teams situation or even changing the whole game. Especially the point Kukoc brought up (stockpiling cheap players in the playoffs) is so bad...
