Was this in the 4th Quarter in a blow out victory?
The only reason why a coach would do that is if you are winning by a large margin then he subs in guys that are not assigned to any positions in the depth chart for the last 1-5 minutes max of the game.
The only work around for this is to not have excess players that are not assigned to a position on the depth chart on your starting team.
