Question: would Yao get in based solely on his on-the-court performance? Certainly not on his limited time in the NBA...

No, although he would if he'd avoided injury, or if he'd played college basketball in the USA. As a talent, he's a first-ballot HOFer. As a contributor, he should have the damn thing named after him.

Bill Walton played 468 NBA games and I think he's in the HOF. He, like Yao, had his career cut short by injury. Of course, Walton had a stellar college career (does that count), plus led Portland to the title in '77. I think he was also on the bench for one of Boston's title teams too.

Eaton was an interesting player...a defensive presence for sure. But honestly, I don't think he ever was one of the best players in the NBA and it would be real hard for me to see why he'd go in the HOF. He only was in one all-star game and never higher than 13th in the MVP voting.

yes it counts, you could end there without playing ever in the NBA don't know if someone manage that - but i could imagine that there are some college trainers in the mix.

So does Yao's playing time in China "count" towards the HOF? Should it?

yes it should, the question is how high you could rate those succes? NT games would be more important, but China didn't win much there and the olympics would be also more a marketing succes. And the asian championship lacks a bit of competition.
