i only got to see a very small portion of 1 game, but i heard the announcer say that it's hard to dribble. (something about having to slap at the top of the ball... & traveling being really strict? and something else about the ball i can't remember).

Wanted to see at least 1 game, but I always got stuck with water polo being on for some reason....

Handball and basketball are very different ;)

Handball is pretty rough, you are only allowed to make "3 pointer", you have a keeper, the ball is smaller. Dribbling isn't that hard, but the step rules are different at least from fiba basketball rules. Overall two different sports.

But basically, you can't just run to the goal, you can only take a few steps or something?

I didn't mean to imply it was just like basketball, but its more like basketball than any of the other sports I'm familiar with.

you have three steps before and after dribbling*, and you couldn run the goal since you have to jump of 6 m away from the goal - which is in most cases more like 9m.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDWjPnmSEHY&feature=re... take a look at this, here you see also some kind of defense, that is not passing around the zone like in absketball.

* i know they do it already in the nba like that ;)

^^

Of course, handball is close to basketall, they share several fundamentals.
The only other sport I know where you bounce a ball with your hands is gaelic football, terrific sport that one ! :)

So yes, one difference with basketball is that you are allowed three steps like in the NBA :p

It's not that big in Europe, it's very popular in Germany (the best league) and in the Nordic countries but it's non-existent in the UK or in Italy.

Don´t know if you´ve read it already but Bill Simmons recently wrote a piece about handball and similarities with basketball:
