You put a backup in.
Easy as that.
They will come out if you are beating the opponent by 20 points or more.

Of course, it might not be easy as that to always be leading by 20 points after 3 quarters. I think it depends on the quality and game shape of your backups. I've had starters left in 40-48 minutes, and others who are in the 30-40 range. Difference seems to be how adequate the backups are.

Can't be sure but putting in good backups goes a long way.

Is there any specific way to make sure your starters don't play much more than 36 or 37 minutes a game and not 40+?

Have good backups and don't let the starters' stamina get above maybe mediocre.

Hrudey is right. Staminas in the 7-9 range can lead to 80+ minute weeks when starting two games that aren't blowouts.

So stamina actually plays a part in this as well.

Lower stamina and your coach will try and sub the guy pretty early, and he will end up playing low 30's minutes (like, 33, 34)

Higher stamina (that is, Proficient), the guy will not get subbed, or will onyl get subbed for a few minutes, so end up playing high 40's for minutes.

While this is true, it might not be a bad thing because I'm seeing that my high stamina players can handle 80+ minutes a week while staying at 8 GS. I believe high stamina leads to better ability to keep high GS with high minutes, so I wouldn't purposely keep stamina low for GS.
