In regards to what I want to do, I don't think I need to track DMI.
My goal is simply to break down performances over the course of one season into more advanced statistics than those shown in game. So for shooting, the basic stats are FG% and 3PT%, but using Game analyser I can break this down into close-range %, mid-range % and long-range %, and then go even further and break those down into each individual shot type that exists in the game. By doing this, I can then answer many questions about the league this season that I wouldn't normally be able to, such as 'Who was the best at driving lay-ups in the season 29 ABBL?'
Seeing Stone Slashers give up a WO, and Chelsea Seagulls throw his scrubs out, has put a real dampener on my ambitious plans. In light of this, I think I'll scale back my goals for this project a little bit and focus solely on advanced shooting data for every regular player in the league.
Shooting percentage has somewhat of a soft cap in this game, so games where one team puts out a bad line-up affect the overall data a lot less, and this can be even further mitigated by separating the shot charts into 'unassisted' and 'assisted', because the winning team in such games tends to generate a lot of assisted shot attempts which drives their shooting percentage up.
