Philippines U21 bucks slow start, surges past Hungary U21, 89-75 (81037)Oslo, Norway -- After overcoming a sluggish start, Philippines U21 are now on the board as they get their first win in the World Cup. The Filipinos fumbled early on, with Hungary U21 racing to an early lead, leading by as much as 16 points at one point in the second quarter, 24-40. Philippines U21 just scored 28 points in the first half, compared to Hungary U21's 42 points.
In the third quarter, Philippines U21 slowly chipped away at the huge deficit, and even claiming the lead at one point, 59-57. The fourth quarter proved to be the pivotal moment for the Filipinos as they made a decisive push towards the victory, scoring 30 points in the last 12 minutes. Hungary U21, on the other hand, struggled in the final canto, offensively and defensively. They only scored 11 points while allowing Philippines U21 to score all over the court.
"It was a collective effort, especially on defense, as well as in rebounding and assists department," Coach Leo praised his wards after the win. "That third quarter run took too much out of everybody, but I'm thankful that they came through in the fourth (quarter)." Asked if he was satisfied, "For now, yes, because we got the result that we wanted, but we still didn't play 48 minutes. There's still room for improvement."
Raphael Duruelo's presence wasn't felt in their last game versus Hong Kong U21, but he made sure it was felt on this one as he top-scored for Philippines U21 with 21 points, on top of 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
Bill Guerrero, who didn't play last game, powered his way to an 18-point output, while corraling 8 rebounds.
Cornelio Porminal and
Boen Chong each chipped in 10 points. Porminal also collected 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
Delfin Jalando-on almost got a double-double with 8 points and 14 rebounds.
Andre Hogan Sevilla started for the first time, but still contributed nicely with 8 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal and 1 block.
Károly Gyimesi was expected to do a lot of damage, and that was the case as he led Hungary U21 in scoring and rebounding, 18 points and 17 rebounds.
Bence Rózsa also had 18 points. Both starting bigs were saddled with foul trouble throughout the game.
Izsó Estélyi, their backup pivot, contributed 11 points and 9 rebounds, while
István Vanca added 10 points and 7 assists. This will be Hungary U21's second loss in as much games.
