But the thing that's really nebulous is how the current skills star rating is calculated.

I never really paid attention on how it was listed, i've never had a good draft spot to begin with. I thought you only saw 2 types of information in the draft results page. "picks" and "favored". Picks was always nicely numbered from 1 - 48, and favored was kinda varied from ones and two's and in the 30-ish.

And i know when you draft the second time you get the other information. ;)

Sorry :-)

The normal distribution is the Gaussian distribution:

It's a sombrero shape instead of a flat distribution.

The normal distribution could be used for the frequentie of appearence, but if I understood BB correctly [40492.8 ] and the statement that only 20% has allstar potential or higher still makes me believe that potential is liniaer in terms of star rating/potential. Players with 3, 4 or 5 star potential have allstar potential and up, but only 20% of the players have it (not evenly divided between 3, 4 and 5 stars but something like 15%, 4% and 1%). I am not completly firmiliar with the "normal" distribution, but that would almost mean that only 5 star potential has an allstar potential or up, and so 20% of the draftees should have a 5 star potential...

i don't remember if it was ever stated: do we know where the "allstar" potential falls, into the 3 stars or 4 stars category?

No, we don't... Only that just 20% of all draftee's have a potential of allstar or higher... But we are about to find out :)
