Pilipinas U21 Use a Strong 4th Quarter to Overcome Al Jazair 94-80 (39962)

Despite being down 28-18 after the first quarter, Pilipinas fought back by slowly trimming the lead. Pilipinas finally got the lead after Clark hit a shot with 2 seconds left in the third. From that point onwards, Pilipinas never looked back, outscoring Al Jazair 28-16 in the fourth on their way to the victory.

Engelbert Nisperos (38956653) led the team with 20 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks while Clark Lloyd (38955973) added 18 points in 23 minutes.

Unfortunately, Lietuva won their game against Brazil so they were able to qualify for the World Championship. In our case, we are sent to the consolation tournament with a record of 0-2. Having the best finish among Asian teams will give us the home court advantage in the tournament next season. For now, we focus on our next game against Indonesia on Monday, January 2, 2017, 6:30 PM.

Pilipinas U21 (1-2) Blows Out Indonesia U21 (0-3) 108-52 (40381)

Engelbert Nisperos (38956653) again led the team with 18 points, while Victor Perfecto Suarez (38956273) added a double double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Manuel Caritat (39709783) finished with 7-8 shooting for 17 points after starting 0-3 from the field.

Pilipinas started well defensively, holding their opponents to 8 points in the opening quarter. However, their shots weren’t falling so they were only able to get 16 points. At the start of the second quarter, it seemed that Pilipinas easily cruise through a victory after a 8-0 run. But after a timeout from Indonesia, they countered with an 8-0 run of their own. From that point onwards things went back and forth until Pilipinas finished the half with a 7-2 run. Finally, Pilipinas was able to pull away in the third outscoring their opponents 29-16. By the fourth quarter, Pilipinas padded their PD through a 39-9 trashing.

Our next game will be against Việt Nam U21, which will be on Monday, January 9, 2017.

After all the games are done, Pilipinas moved from rank 61 to rank 34, leaving us just outside the top 32 teams which will move on to the knockout stage. Among Asian teams, we are second behind Nippon (2-1) and ahead of Australia with 56 PD vs 12 PD.

Cheng Baifeng Joins Pilipinas U21

Cheng Baifeng (38956301) averages 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in league play. His addition will help add depth to the team, which is currently unable to play some players due to injury or bad game shape. Get a chance to watch him play tomorrow January 9, 2017, 8 PM as we take on Việt Nam U21.

Pilipinas U21 (2-2) Defeats Việt Nam U21 (1-3) 136-81 (40442)

After a three pointer by center Canh Nguyên cut the lead to 3 early in the first, Pilipinas went on a 12-0 run and never looked back. Việt Nam made a few runs throughout the game, but none were able to threaten our team. This win gives Pilipinas their second 50 point victory of the season.

John Paul Treñas (38956091) leads the team with 24 points and 5 three pointers, while Cheng Baifeng (38956301) added 21 in his first game with the team. Manuel Caritat (39709783) was able to provide a spark off scoring 11 points in only 2 minutes.

Our next game will be on Monday, January 16, 11:30 PM against Latvija. Compared to our last 2 games, the next opponent is much stronger.

Update: The standings are updated and we are now in the top 32! At rank 27, we are currently the highest among Asian teams thanks to 111 PD, but New Zealand (7 PD), Nippon (3 PD), Macau (-22 PD), and U.A.E. (-72 PD) are close behind with the same number of wins. Latvija U21 (5-0) Defeats Pilipinas U21 (2-3) 82-70 (40493)

A 10-2 run late in the third quarter gave Latvija a 9 point lead, and Pilipinas never recovered. Engelbert Nisperos (38956653) led the team with 19 points and 10 rebounds, but overall the team struggled to score managing only a 31% field goal percentage.

Pilipinas U21 hopes to bounce back next Monday, January 23, 2017, 6:30 PM against Cymru U21.

After the loss, we move down to 3rd among Asian teams and 37th overall, while Nippon sneaks in the top 32 after a win over México. Rounding up the Asian teams with winning records is Macau (3-2), which won over Puerto Rico and is now ranked 34.
