I got 18 pops in 20 weeks with a level 4 trainer. But I intentionally train the player is such a way that I can try and get 1 pop per week, where as most people don't do that.

I somehow avoided loss of training despite injury that luckily ended yesterday, and got my reward. Looks like every backup skill except for OD should be all right on him. I wonder if its worth training OD next season?

I wouldn't bother training OD. I would train One on One and Jump Shot until Handling gets to proficient.
By that time you should have 5 pops in Handling, 9 pops in Driving, 2 pops in Inside Shot, and 2 pops in Jump Range and 7 pops in Jump Shot. And then do 2 weeks of passing training.

The player would then look like this approximately:
Jump Shot: sensational Jump Range: proficient
Outside Def.: awful Handling: proficient
Driving: tremendous Passing: strong
Inside Shot: tremendous Inside Def.: prominent
Rebounding: prominent Shot Blocking: average
Stamina: inept Free Throw: inept

Experience: awful

By this time he is probably close to turning 22. So while he is 22 you can rotate training between ID and Rebounding until they are both on Tremendous as well.
And you would have a fantastic player.

you know, virus is obcessed with all-round player, so he may be too idealistic on the secondary skills. personally i think your training plan is gd enough

Second player is okay, but is going to have a big salary and has some bad secondaries.
The first player is really good.
I would train the first guy in the following:
Train OD until it is at proficient.
Train one on one until Handling is at proficient.
Train passing to strong.
Train Jump Shot to prominent.
Train Jump Range to Strong.
Then train IS up to prolific.
Then train ID up to prolific.
Then train Rebounding up to prolific.
