cut & paste from cup forum where wb & i debate if wombats or urmummas r the better team

if ne1 really thinks urmammas is #2 team in oz better than wombats, pancakes, koop, aussie pride or bls they r just tripping

for the record

Guanzheng Goldfish (38642)
Manager: abigfishy
Country: Australia
League: ABBL
Rival: adams guns
World Rank: 250
Country Rank: 3

does ne1 really think im the #3 team in oz? no way

the official rankings top 20

Whitebeard 1 12
Urmummas 2 166
Guanzheng Goldfish 3 250
Aussie Pride 4 297
Monkey Business 5 341
Black Label Society 6 408
Awesome^.- 7 417
Pancakes with Jam and Cream 8 429
Koopasaurus 9 461
Chelsea Seagulls 10 494
Lewisham Wombats 11 547
Western Titans 12 737
WA IS A DUMP 13 872
Slam ! 14 910
West Island Tigers 15 931
Bell Park SuperCats 16 1014
Southern Breakers 17 1183
Billy Hoyles Boys 18 1205
tannum tantrums 19 1229
Chumunga 20 1375

but they r way out a team like ombats maybe tanking now but with many millions in the bank, a top manager & incredible history must be much higher

so here is the fishy top 12 & u will notice i am not even in my own top 12 lol

1 Whitebeard best team in oz by far the benchmark 4 the rest
2 Lewisham Wombats best oz team of all time have the smarts & money just not the inclination
3 Black Label Society when they try they win taking their time training their beastsbut when ready theyll be unbeatable
4 Pancakes with Jam and Cream historically beasts & r back on the up after a rebuild
5 WA IS A DUMP just check the trophy cabinet currently waiting out the WB domination
6 Koopasaurus got mad skills, fearless & a touch of luck
7 Urmummas great economic manager & poker player willing to go all in
8 Chelsea Seagulls well managed & coached team does it with low budget
9 Bell Park SuperCats very quiet & low profile but been in the abbl since season 5
10 Aussie Pride very well managed & coached
11 Monkey Business was a benchmark 4 well balanced teams only 1/2 playing now
12 Awesome^.- a shout 2 the young guy youngest abbl ever coming from season 13 & not doing badly this season in abbl

If you truly want to debate about historical all time Australian BB manager rankings or even recent rankings, there are plenty of managers missing from that list.

Missing in all time:
Tier 1: Eagles, Shoei, Shepard
Gap
Gap
Gap
Tier 2: Name all those that made the ABBL/Cup Finals or have longevity in the ABBL.

Missing in recent times:
Slam, Chumunga, Noodles, Bogans

Depends on how you judge a manager in ranking. Is it performance? Is it community work? Combination of both?

If you want to talk about the best aus team of all time, its probably between Shoei, the Eagles and Dire. I'd put myself on the tier below with bryce and Whitebeard (though I'd expect you to hit the top tier in the not to distant future ;))

Thats exactly that... its like saying how can you compare Michael Jordan and Bill Russell?
They totally dominated in different eras playing with different rules and players.

60's and 70's - Eagles, Shoei, Shepard - comparable to Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlains, Elgin Baylor.

80's - Direwolf, mllama, WA is a dump - comparable to Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird.

90's - Whitebeard and the other teams who spend most of their time in the ABBL - comparable to stars of the 90's like David Robinson, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Charles Barkley... and of course Michael Jordan.

* Whitebeard is slowly establishing himself to the be the Michael Jordan of aussie BB, if he can continue to dominate and deny everyone the ABBL title for seasons to come, then he will no doubt be compared to the MJ of aussie BB. Teams like Koops, Monkeybiz, Park Bell Supercats, Billy Hoyes Boyes and co. can be commpared to the Karl Malone, John Stockton and Charles Barkley who also did not win NBA titles during their careers. LOL

Give it a few more years and we'll have some Lebrons, Durants, and Kobe's.

I believe there is an even greater threat elsewhere this season...for me anyways. ;)

Would you want to indulge into that further? I would very much like to know who can challenge the MJ of aussie BB atm.

Charles Barkley got denied, Malone and Stockton both got denied more then twice, Gary Payton a few times. No doubt Olajuwon wouldve been denied twice as well if MJ didnt retire to try out baseball. Pretty sure Reggie Miller got denied too.

I reckon the Dream could have won both those titles but MJ could have probably still won. The Rockets had to beat teams that the Bulls had to beat to win their titles. Rockets beat a younger Jazz in 94 and 95 and they also swept Magic who beat Bulls 4-2 in 95. MJ may not have been back for a full basketball season in 95 but his stats were staggering in the playoffs even against the Magic. Besides, I think MJ sitting out those seasons actually helped him fuel his fire for his second 3 peat. Maybe I'll just take a break just like MJ soon. ;)

Okay a bit of "supplier selection 101"

Step 1

Selection (eligibility) criteria

Agree on a selection criteria to allow a Manager to be considered
i.e. A total of 5 seasons in the ABBL and or the Manager to have won either the ABBL or Cup Trophy

Step 2 (Optional)
Shortlist

Reduce the candidates down to a manageable list (perhaps 10 or 12 at most)

Can be done by popular opinion or by making eligibilty criteria harder . i.e. must have stayed 5 seasons in the ABBL consecutively or won 2 trophies instead of 1

Step 3

Work out marking criterias and weightings

Work out the criteria as to how these Managers will be judged and give each criteria weighting.
i.e. Success = 200% Longivity = 150% Tactical nous (in games)= 100% Economic nous = 100% Activity in communities = 50% etc etc etc (possibly have 5 to 10 criteria each with its own weighting)
Nice if the criterias when multiplied by weightings add up to allow a maximum possible score of 100

Step 4

Selection of judges

Decide upon a group of judges (ideally of varying backgrounds and maybe numbering 3 or 5, but also who are able to fairly judge all candidates- many of whom may not be as active as what they once were)

Step 5

Scoring

Each judges scores each Manager that passed the selection criteria (in step 1) or short list (step 2 if applicable)
They do this by marking each Manager out of 10 for each of the individual criterias (from step 2)
i.e
(Judge) Yoda marked candidate Whitebeard the following;

Success 8 out of 10
Longivity 7 out of 10
Tactical nous 6 out of 10
Economic nous 7 out of 10
Activity in community 6 out of 10
etc

Step 6

Multiply by weightings
Yodas score of Whitebeard was
Success 8 x 2 = 16
Longivity 7 x 1.5 = 10.5
Tactical nous 6 x 1 = 6
Economic nous 7 x 1 = 7
Activity in community 6 x .5 = 3
etc

Step 7

Add up judges scores for each manager

i.e.

Candidate Whitebeard

Judge Yoda 73
Judge Dire 80
Judge Bobby Locke 78
Judge Hadders 67
Judge Avalon Jets 72

Whitebeard scores 370

V other candidates scores

Wow that is quite an impressive bit of data right there. I vote that you are the judge. I'd love to see what you came up with. To be honest I am very rusty on the guys before season 10 and probably don't rate them as highly as the guys playing now: I suspect it was a lot easier to make and stay in the ABBL in season five than it is now.
