I like the train of thought but why don't we have 5s play 8s and 6s play 7s and the loser is relegated. That way the only way you won't be relegated is finish in the the Top 4.

That would make the TL light up ridiculously in the last few weeks of the season...

I personally really like the lottery idea for choosing sides. It would be a fun twist right before every season starts.

Or the eastern and western conferences could be done based on the place users mostly logged in during last season.

There are some points for playing vs the same teams seasons after seasons. It create some long terms strategy and develop specific rivalry, both in your own conference and between both conferences.

The Strength of the two conferences is an issue. And maybe conferences could be rebalanced in some way from one season to the next. Rank the teams somehow then split them more or less evenly.

We had an extreme case last season, as both teams from the same conf lost the play down. Moreover the new team being demoted from the stronger division, gave up the game and is now a bot . The result is that one conference get 4 new teams, 1 bot and three from the lower division. The other conference is significantly stronger, having the favourite for the final two seasons in a row but failing to promote because of injuries.

This often happens. When there is a gap between both confs, It may take a long time before it gets balanced.
You can check my division : 5 winners in a row from conf2, frequent differences in wins between both confs, and often 2 teams from conf2 winning the playdowns.

I think I'll open a new thread with my suggestion as it's not about changes in league structure but changes in matches schedule.

Instead of playing 22 games with 14 matches vs your conf and 8 vs other conf, I suggest we should all 22 matches in below order:

1. Vs your conf
2. Vs Second conf
.
.
.
21. Vs your conf
22. Vs second conf

By doing so we will eliminate any miss balance between conf and won't have to change the game that much.
The only downside is that teams will play the first 15 games vs every team in the league while in the renaming 7 games teams will play only vs some teams.

This will increase randomize value of schedule in beginning of the season, but I think it's ok as we have this effect now a days as we don't know which team we will play home or away in the second conf. As long as it's randomize it's fine as luck changes each season

Sounds quite good to me. And it would also make it a little bit more difficult to win your conference if you're in an "easier" group. And also the chance to maybe play twice against an opponent from the other conference would make it fun.

That's true, but then what happens is that you don't play all teams from your conference twice. Four of them you play twice, and the other 3 only once (home or away), and against the other conference you play 3 teams twice and the other 5 only once. It may make it interesting in those cases when one of the conferences is harder than the other, but it may also happen that you end up playing the toughest opponents only once, and away from home!

If we are playing teams from both conferences the same number of times, why not abolishing the whole conference separation? You have a 16 team league, and you play 6 of them twice and the other 10 once, to total 22 games (actually in this case 24 games would make more sense). In the end the top 8 make the playoffs (1vs8, 2vs7, etc), 9 and 10 stay put, 11-14 play relegation series (11vs14, 12vs13), and 15 and 16 go down. If we want to keep the two separate divisions, I think it makes more sense to play the teams in your division twice. I like the idea of having all opponents sort of on the same ground, but I think it fits better without separate divisions.

Cheers!
