At last! Revenge served cold!

Well, I wouldn't exactly call it revenge because we weren't going for the win in our last meeting, but it sounded like a great way to start the report. Anyway, we beat Lebanon U21 by 16 points to make it 1-1 against them this season. Not like it matters, but at least we prevented them from sweeping us.

We continued to be hit by the GS bug as we found ourselves short on serviceable bigmen again, despite already having 5 (if we don't count utilityman Fong Kum Hui) in the team. Hence I am once again very glad that our U21 pool is deep enough that I managed to dig up Tay Shun Siong, who was ready to battle. He performed admirably in his debut with 13 points and 9 rebounds. His aggressiveness on the offensive post saw him draw some fouls, as well as grabbing a game high 5 offensive rebounds. His partner in the post, Chua How Feng, refused to be outdone, and posted an all-round performance with 16 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 blocks. It was a career night for him at the defensive end, as he has only ever blocked that many times once, and even then, it was a scrimmage where he played 48 minutes. His 16 rebounds also meant he is only the 5th Singaporean player to break 300 rebounds for the U21, leapfrogging Toh Chun Yao to take 5th place in the all-time rebound standings. With 2 games left, how high up the rankings can he climb?

Equally impressive on the defensive end was Mike Gomboting, who picked up his first start. He finished the game with 9 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Although he just shot 31% from field, but his willingness to switch up his game and set up his teammates gave him an impressive +/- of +20. The only one to top that was Ethan bin Intiang, who hit a game high 24 points off 63% shooting. Last of all, Ang An Da continued to be the heart of the offense, with an impressive statline of 19 points and 8 assists, hitting 64% of his shots from field.

I should say, our defense really carried us today. However we might want to learn how to reduce our mistakes, as we had quite a number of silly turnovers.

We shall face goliath Hong Kong U21 next. They are clear frontrunners to finish 1-2 alongside Philippines U21, so don't bank on us getting anything out of the game. Setting sights on our neighhours, Malaysia U21, would be a more realistic target.

OMG yes! How did I miss that. He hit exactly 100 assists after this game. He is indeed our most complete offensive player here. Definitely our future CP3!

I expected HK to underestimate us and maybe steal a win, but sadly, things didn't go our way. I legit thought we had a chance considering the fight we put up against Philippines U21. Unfortunately I guess that game might have put them on their toes. That said, we are the only team to hold them to below 30% shooting this season.

Chua How Feng was probably our best performer tonight, with 12 points, 17 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. However, he shot an abysmal 19% from the field. That said, it really felt like a rigged performance, because how can someone with NT level IS miss open shots near the basket? That said, his performance on the boards put him just 10 rebounds short of overtaking Fang Shuangxiang and Seet Woon Loong for 2nd place on the all time charts. Nathan Macklin also stuffed the stat sheet with a double-double. He put up a respectable performance on both sides of the court with 11 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist, and 4 blocks. However, he caused 4 turnovers, and only hit 25% from the field.

Our last game will be against our neighbors Malaysia U21. It's nothing more than a match of bragging rights to see who ends up in 3rd place. Let's hope our boys put up a good fight!

Thank you for your words of encouragement. Yea, I think it was a pretty decent season so far. Sorry to hear about the banned team case for you. Hopefully their GS won't get affected and you can still put up a strong performance in the semis. All the best!

Even though they're no longer with us, their fighting spirit still lives. As if mourning the loss of one of our country's top franchise, Buterter, we were assigned to host Malaysia U21 in their arena tonight.

In the run up to this game, I initially wanted to go with an outside offense, since their U21 manager seemed to have a penchant for running 2-3 against us when we seem like an inside oriented team. But with the basket being very unfriendly for us recently, I had to prioritize gaining possessions, which is why I went with LI to maximize our chances to grab offensive boards.

Things couldn't have gone smoother for us. We flew to a 27-22 lead in the first quarter, with our aggressive play riling up our neighbours as they committed foul after foul to send us to the line again and again. Sadly, our team seems to be cursed with bad free throw shooting, as we only hit 7 of 14 attempts. Nevertheless, it was enough to give us an early lead. Our boys pushed the lead further in the second, coming out tops after a tight boxing match to start the quarter where both sides exchanged punches non stop. We let our foot off the pedal in the second half, but thankfully, our first half heroics (and a failed hack-a-shaq attempt by Malaysia U21) were enough to close the game.

Chua How Feng was our best player in the game. Despite being repeatedly boxed out by our neighbours when he tried to fight to rebounds, he managed to contribute well on both sides of the court, with an impressive statline of 25 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. He shot 75% from field. Nathan Macklin was not far behind, hitting 24 points off 71% shooting. He also picked up 7 rebounds and 2 assists.

As our opponents were trying their best to keep Chua How Feng in check, they left Tay Shun Shiong alone, and the 6'7" bigman summoned his inner Dennis Rodman (same height too!) and dominated the boards. He was the only player in the game to get a double-double, as he pulled down an impressive 18 rebounds to go with his 11 points. Despite not having much rest, thanks to Fong Kum Hui being KOed after 1 minute of play, he did not let fatigue overcome him and put in the best performance of his U21 career.

With this win, we secured 3rd place in the group, which is pretty meaningless. Still, it was a good game, with our boys finally finding the net at a high rate again. Of course, it was at the expense of our defense, but I guess the teadeoff was worth it. Our next match will be the last scrimmage of the season. I'd most probably drop some players from the team so we can have a sneak peek of some future players. That said, as usual, I'd keep the top contributors around so we can have a goodbye match for them (and hopefully Chua How Feng climbs onto 2nd place in the all-time rebounding chart).

We've got one more game to go, but since official games are over, time for our end of the season awards!

MVP
Chua How Feng: 2nd in points scored, 1st in rebounds, 2nd in assists. There's no other player who can offer an all-round game like our star player Chua How Feng. He was already one of the top players of the team at 19, and he just kept getting better. Look forward to see him flourish at NT level in the future.

DPOY
Png Rong: 2.5 blocks per game isn't exactly impressive, however given that he has only started 4 games, it is one helluva achievement - he actually has 4.52 blocks per 36 minutes. He even managed a block in his first defensive possession tonight, showing that he is still no slouch on defense despite not being in form.

6th Man of the Year
Fong Kum Hui: 9 of 18 players actually qualified for this award, but in the end, I decided to go for Fong Kum Hui. He has put in some pretty consistent performances as a sub, and game me insurance from 1 through 5. He's good enough to occasionally break into the starting lineup, but as he is a Jack of All Trades, we often see better specialists make it ahead of him. His highlight was during his debut against Japan U21, where he hit 17 points in 14 minutes, shooting 60% from the field and from 3.

Most improved player
Ethan bin Intiang: I certainly didn't expect him to be any more than a bit part player as he was literally a Tyrese Haliburton, however his dedication to his craft saw him develop into a reliable offensive player, earning him 7 consecutive starts midway through the season. He would have started tonight (and I wish he could), however alas, other players had better game shape.

Newbie of the Year
Nathan Macklin: called up due to our GS crisis, Nathan Macklin was a great surprise. He fit into the team seamlessly and hit the ground running. Averaging 12.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists, he scored double figures in all but 2 games he played in, and even hit two double-doubles. Can we expect him to carry the team next season?

Mr. Reliable
Ang An Da: 12 appearances, 11 starts. Where else can you find a more reliable player than him? In fact he would like likely started had newcomer Tan Yeng Shi was not in hot form. Still, he put up a performance worthy of a starter.

Stowaway Award
Abdur-Razzaq Jalil: It might sound like a negative award, but I created this award for players with the most DNPs. I don't really have a habit of playing more players than necessary, but the meticulous training and game shape management by his manager made me feel that he deserves a bit of monetary incentive - so I decided to put him on the game squad as an unused sub for every game where he hits proficient GS as an encouragement (well it's just a few hundred dollars extra, but still I hope it's better than nothing xD). He wasn't on the game squad today because we just had too many players with good GS.
