I just don't like John Wayne movies.
Saving Private Ryan and The Shining get my votes.

Saving Private Ryan and Avatar. Avatar has to get the nod even though it is so recent because it is one of those benchmark movies that lead to a whole new viewing pleasure. Titanic and jurrasic park were like this. Terminator 2 when it came out. Star Wars. Generational movies.
Droids: so because of this thread I took the wife out to see black swan. Never in a million years would I have said I would come out of the movie liking it more than my wife. It was pretty damn good. I don't know if it should make the bracket but pretty damn good.

Tombstone is a good western, but I'd say Once Upon a Time in the West is truly a top caliber movie that just happens to be a western. Outlaw Josie Wales is also a favorite and a darn good movie.
Heat is good. What about the Professional?
Jurassic Park? Come on. Mediocre movie based on a good book. The idea of the movie is what everyone likes.

- Day 2 -
For matchup 1: abstain from 4 versus 13. I do not really enjoy westerns and war movies so I hope to not skew the votes either way.
For matchup 2: 5 (Avatar) - over 12 (The Shining).
Day 2 matchups cut across very clear genre categories though, thus genre preference rather than the specific movies motivate my vote.

Outlaw Jesse Wales was excellent.
The Professional was great as well.
Heat is just number 1 for me. I can watch that anytime.
You are partially right on jurrasic park, but what made that a generational movie was the cgi at the time. You watch it now and it is very ordinary but I still remember watching it at the theatre opening night and being blown away at the cgi. I guess that part of movies loses their luster over time.

Hitch? The Notebook? Black Swan? Independence Day? Wow...what a horrible list.
How anyone could put any of those movies in a list of the greatest films of all time is beyond me.
Really? The Notebook?
HITCH???????? That's not even one of the best 3 movies with Eva Mendes, let alone one of the best of all time.
The Notebook is one of the most skewed chick flicks on IMDB with a rating difference of 1 full point between women and men. Again, it's not even close to so many films excluded from your list.
