Burke did what he thought was best for the team. He go fired because the new management didn't like his approach. He has left a pretty bad team with little numbers of good prospects. Its not all on him though.

They've had lots of underachieving players, bad drafting partly because of poor scouting, and Toronto, as a market, isn't a place most players would like to go.

Edmonton started their rebuild around the same time but they had the advantage of having a market players want to go to along with great drafting. Toronto has been on the bottom for too long but they are never low enough to get good prospects. That, and giving away those couple firsts to Boston has left them depleted.

Burke simply isn't in his environment in Toronto. He did do a poor job, but it was not all on him.

I like the Lombardi trade. Paying a guy like him 3.5 million and being pleased when he scores 10 goals is ridiculous, and unloading that contract frees up his roster spot for Nazem Kadri (who possibly would have made it anyways) and gives him solid playing time over a 48 game season, and let's us see once and for all whether he's still worth the time, or it's time to get rid of him.

Burke was fired because he was excruciatingly bad at his job. If he was surly and authoritative and the Leafs were winning, he'd still be here and would be the most beloved man in Toronto. His "approach" being the reason he was fired was propagated by the media. The timing is the only real question (and any reasonable person would suggest it should've happened years earlier).

There's no comparison to be made between Edmonton and Toronto; one rebuilt and the other didn't. One's on the upswing and the other's not. And by the way, Edmonton is one of the very least favourite markets. Players hate Edmonton. Edmonton, though, was able to make itself a more attractive destination for Shultz (and no who else?) by greatly improving their on-ice product and future. Toronto is one of the best pure markets made bad by an abysmal product, and made worse by a deluded GM who makes unrealistic promises. Toronto's not a bad market, they're an awful team with self-inflicted wounds.

Yakupov's celebration(for the right reasons) completely overshadowed an amazing hockey game.

Don Cherry hates Yakupov so we'll see what he says... it was a very fitting celebration for the events at the end of the game.
