I'm not sure where you got that from, but I'm fairly certain James Naismith invented the idea of peach baskets being nailed 10 feet above the ground. It still is an American sport though, as Naismith invented it so that his gym class in Springfield, Massachusetts had something to do on a rainy day. Also, the first organized game was played in Albany, New York. ANYWAY I, like locopaps, think the randomness of the cup is a good thing.

The Mesoamerican ballgame and basketball both happen to have a hoop that players tried to put the ball through. But, in the Mesoamerican ballgame, the hoop is a different size in relation to the ball and is vertical to the ground instead of horizontal to the ground. The field that the Mesoamerican ballgame was played on was an I-shape and the rings (hoops) were set on the sides at midfield. In fact, the rings weren't even a big part of the game as they weren't added until later. Besides the rings, the ballgame has nothing to do with basketball. Even if James Naismith did base his game, originally called Basket Ball, off the earlier ballgame, he changed it so much that I'd still call him the inventor of basketball, as volleyball and tennis are much more closely related than the ballgame and basketball.

Naismith admitted that he based the game on the Mayan version.

He did a wonderful thing, though. I LOVE basketball!!

I think BuzzerBeater is an amazing game. There are a tremendous amount of great attributes, but I won't bore everyone here with listing them.

I do think suggestions and new implementations are exciting though, and I'm curious if any of the GMs (or anyone) has any idea how easy is would be to implement the "back-up tactic" in the second half. I particularly like that idea. If you're down by 15 or more, your back-up tactic can kick in starting in the third quarter. Not knowing how the game engine works, it seems like it'd be among the easier implementations?
