I find it difficult to invest in the idea that the USA was hurt by being geographically big and Qatar not big when humongous Russia (and to be fair, it appears only their cities west of the Urals are involved) won their vote over not so big England.

European Russia is 4 million sq kilometers. The continental USA is 9.5 million sq kilometers.

Did you read about Japan's proposal to have 3d projected players in stadiums across the world? SO AWESOME!

The World Cup isn't just for the tiny country of Qatar, it's for the entire Middle East. In the same way the (highly successful!) South African cup was for Africa. I'm glad it will finally show Islamic nations in a positive light after all the fear-mongering we have here in the States.

...the size argument does not apply equally to both countries?

That's my point.

Al-Qaeda, which is prominently located in the Middle East has annoyed not only the US the last 20 years, but the entire world. I'm not sure if the committee was thinking that having a world cup near a hot Al-Qaeda ground would help our relations. I'm not saying there will be terrorist attacks in Qatar but there will be some tense grounds. Luckily Qatar is located closer to friendly Saudi Arabia, than Iran/Iran/Pakistan, but it will still be more of a political statement that a game if a country that Al-Qaeda dislikes gets to the final.

If size was the only factor when deciding WC bids, then sure. We'd also be prepping for Monaco 2014 and Vatican 2018. Alas, other factors exist!

Just saying, size played into each decision somewhat, who knows how much.
