According to wikipedia NBA arenas are all 16-21k, and only two arenas in the world are larger than 25k. So there is probably a soft cap on real life attendance as well.

Soft cap is not a thing, simply because at any given game, the whole city can come to the game, say its a playoff game, say its a game against the other city team, whatever it is. In BB its 20-21k no matter what, it can be the greatest game of all time in USA D1, The world cup finals, the league finals.


After doing more research, you are probably right. I think around 20k is still the max you would want while still being able to see the game, but there are examples of people paying for tickets where they aren't that bothered and just want to be there (e.g (https://www.espn.co.uk/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/...)).

Anyway regarding BB, I would say as there's no cost to having an over-large arena it doesn't really matter, but maybe an option to remove seats (at no cost or refund) would be a simple implementation for those who want it.
