no. it means that the only the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are used. This makes it easier for referees to signal a player's number because most refs can't count above five... no, it makes it so that any number can be signaled with the fingers.

Once I scored a basket that still makes me laugh.

My tens column is used for sorting out positions...

PG =1x
SG = 2x
SF = 3x
PF = 4x
C = 5x

Starters get 0 or 1 (if I have two guys I'm not sure of then both are assigned...

As the numbers get higher the less I care about the player in the overall gameplan.

And as others have stated, when refs signal to the score keepers table all they do is hold up their hands to signal the number of the player who picked up the foul / technical. It's int his way that the 'official' foul total is read to the score sheet and to the scoreboard.

This way the refs don't need to worry about crowd noise and do not have to walk over the table for every call in order to notify the table that player x picked up a reaching-in foul.

yeah after re-reading thats the conclusion i arrived at so PG 1 SG 2 SF3 PF 4 C 5

I tried to assign numbers according to the role I see the players taking on the court, and honoring some of my favorite current and historical Orlando Magic players:

4- My first PG Gino D'Amour wears Scott Skiles number
12 - Stephan will be Dwight Howard-like, plus he's a teenager.
25 - He Yunilan has a pitiful freethrow skill. So did Nick Anderson in the '95 Finals.
32 - Nolan Isaac is pre-knee injury Dave Corzine or Shaq, take your pick.
35 - Though he bangs the boards harder than Ice ever did, Ching 'Mofo' Mofokeng honors Jerry Reynolds's 35.
40 - James Duggan will hopefully never fill out the 40 jersey the way Shawn Kemp did. Yikes.

You can probably guess why certain players wear 23 and 41 tho.

1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are numbers that represent positions...they don't mean that they have to be the jersey numbers. coaches will lapse into those numbers when coaching their players.
