Best position is just the position where the salary of the player is maximum. It doesn't affect the training speed. The things that effect the training speed are height and age, 5.9 - 6.3 is better for guard and 6.8 - 7.5 is better for bigmen.

Agreed with what else has been said in the thread- the listed position is merely a reflection of his current skills. His height/age are really the only factors that will affect his training speed. As you train him more towards guard skills, his listed position will change.
