I think both of them are important. I've had players with nice rating but stats show they don't contribute much in the game. Those guys probably played better defense but taking just 3-4 shots per 40 minutes while having a good rating is interesting.

If score stats show players' offensive/attacking ability, then I would say ratings show players' defensive ability.
ID, OD and SB ...
Of course, the rating is just an estimate, as it would be affected by the opponent and minutes on the court.
