Hi there redcped. I remember going up against you in the cup once but I didn't realize it was 12 long seasons ago!!!

I'm still learning the teams here. Will need some games in before I can get a feeling of the strength/weakness of the league and the teams here.

You don't look to be training at the moment. Is that right? May I ask why if that is true?

I have learned that I more or less suck at a) drafting and b) training. I have been in the playoffs all but once in the past 20 seasons, I think, so I have almost never had a good pick in that time. And although I did train up two of starting five, I have not found the balance between competing and winning Cup games while also training.

I am usually training 1 or 2 guys but not with the commitment it takes. I don't like to sacrifice early Cup games in order to give a lousy 18yo 48 minutes. So I occasionally miss a week here or there, and I realize that's no way to create superstars.

This wasn't too big a handicap until the TL started pricing people into the stratosphere. Now I'm not sure I can afford to keep buying replacements, but I'll just have to see how it goes.

My approach has always been through training but doesn't mean that is the only way to be successful (or enjoy) in this game.

I hear you on the TL. With those crazy prices, you almost are forced to train but I'm sure managers like you will figure out some creative way to be successful with minimum training. Will be following your team more closely now. :)

The transfer list is nuts. And now getting a 6+ trainer is nuts.

I tend to do it in cycles, where I can train 4 players - in either the guard slots or forward / center slots. I usually try and do it when I'm done with a previous set of players. I then draft hard for a couple of seasons with accumulated draft points (to maximize my chances with good players) and then fill in with transfer list prospects.

I feel like I'm coming up short with this strategy, I still field decent teams but I'm not progressing anymore. Maybe if I focused on just 2 players it would help? Not sure.

Yeah the staff market is as crazy as the player TL. Do you find a big boost with level 6+ trainer? I started playing this game with a level 4 and then progressed to a lvl5. But after training with a lvl 5 for a few seasons, I found the gain was too minimal. Went back to lvl4 and stuck with that until last season. I purchased a lvl6 (and paid a lot for him too) but my experience thus far is somewhat disappointing. :( I personally don't think it's worth it.

With 4 players, are you training 2 position or just rotating guys each week? From Montenegro and Ladner's minutes, I'm guessing you are doing mostly 2 positions. Is that right?

It's so hard to tell! I wish there was more solid data on training effects, kind of like hattrick.

I have found my players get too old too soon to reach the upper limits. So that's why I went for a level 6 trainer.

Yes, I'm training both PG/SG slots and spreading minutes to 5 players (which can be tricky).

Ron Ladner, my best player has reached 12-15 skill levels in all his guard skills - while training 4-5 guard candidates. That's not too bad, I just hoped for more.

Though I don't do too much 2-position training (except for the skills where I can't do single position training), what you described seems to be the consensus with 2 position training. You can build a very good team fast but it can be difficult to build elite players because you simply don't have the time to max out the players' potential.

Have you considered giving Ladner and Montenegro single position training for may this season and next? Higgins is 27 now and I'm planning to give him full training to at least end of next season. I hope those last few pops will elevate him from a good players to something special.

Well, I got a lesson tonight in overlooking an 0-8 team's potential. Sure didn't think I could lose that even with my 2nd-stringers. Congrats, WWE.

Thanks!

I'm curious how far I can go, but I'm sure I won't be winning it!
