i dunno that seems sorta lame to me... what are the real drawbacks of the once per season update? just that the falloff is so steep that the difference between 1 year and the next is large enough that you get unstable dynamics of player valuation as they age? Suddenly a player becomes worth much less even though his ratings are the same?

I want to put a point from another game i play www.sokker.org its similar to hattrick, but has many things better than hattrick, and one of them is that each player on the game has a TALENT. On hattrick a player with 17y old increases after 7 weeks of training in a skill, on sokker a player can take 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the TALENT of that player, if he has 17y, so u can have a player with 20y increasing after 5 weeks of training and a player with 17y taking 8 weeks, so age is not that important, talent is more important.
This talent thing makes the game more close to the real thing, where each player develops at one speed, no mater his age, of course that younger ones can develop faster than old dogs :-)

That's true, that's one of the best things of Sokker :) (altough age is important too... a 17yo has 3 season more of training than a 20yo :) )

i think the definition of talent is subjective, so for me a talented young player would be a young player with a good set of skills already. This ones are the ones that should be trained. So I don't see an huge advantage on having a talent modifier...

But if a player has a good talent, even having raw skills he can be trained and become a decent player, but if a plyer dont have talent, but comes with nice skills, even getting trained he wont be an awesome player.
Both are good ideas, i dont disagree with you Raonne, you have a point :-)

maybe, potential is a more suitable word instead of talent. potential to learn faster :). also, i believe that training system of buzzerbeater is well designed. you can catch some clues from the manual pages and some more from forums.
