If you TIE your Cup game you can have higher enthusiasm for your League games.

Huh, I was doing the opposite. My last league game I new I was outmatched, so I played TIE with the expectation of playing better in my next cup game. Thanks!

It seems to me one would be better served to play TIE almost all the time.

That is a very common practise.
I use it most seasons as it builds over the season and can be very useful come finals time ;-)
