An app might be the turning point for the website, and get a huge userbase back. Or it could be a huge failure where resources and money are wasted. While this all sounds fine and dandy, remember that BB is still trying to profit here and money doesn't grow on trees. A less than good app won't generate any new users, they'll think the app is sloppy and the app will only appeal to people who are already playing. However I am all for the idea of a kickstarter or something where BB collects donations to go towards (and only towards) an app, similar to how they did the advertising campaign a little while ago. I know I'd definitely donate something towards an app. But we have to be realistic and realize a wellmade app cannot be made overnight, and isn't cheap (I assume) either. If they want new users the app HAS to make a strong first impression. Hopefully that can happen.

Do we really need an app? What is the benefit of it?
I don't need/want another app on my phone. Imho it would be enough to provide an HTML game viewer and, maybe even more important, a mobile version of this website.
It's just another fan in the peanut gallery with an opinion, which is meaningless. (Gregg Popovich on LaVar Ball)

Well I don't need an app either, and I also don't want another app on my phone. However, there's not too much people that regularly use a desktop PC or a Laptop anymore. And people are regularly leaving the game.
If you look at the context in which this is happening, there's every year more people with access to the internet, there's not a lot of competition, and the NBA's and Euroleague popularity are both on an all time high. The NBA grew tons in popularity since BB had the most amount of users, and it didn't translate.
This is the least mobile friendly game in the internet probably, and you can tell we are mostly grown ups playing it.
