If LCD means "Let Coach Decide" then I play LCD in the fourth quarter.
From reading in the forum, I'm under the impression selection of this option doesn't make much difference. Lots of complaints regarding this issue.
And if LCD 4th quarter didn't work, what does?
I played LCD 4th quarter precisely because the rules description made it sound like it would solve/prevent this issue. It didn't.

LCD = Let Coach Decide
SFDC = Strictly Follow Depth Chart
NO ONE at this table ordered a rum & Coke
Charles: Penn has some good people
A CT? Really?
Any two will do
Any three for me
Any four will score
Any five are live

Edited above, but I'll repeat I play LCD in the fourth quarter precisely because the rules made it sound like this option would prevent this issue from occuring.

A related question; Is the training ruined equally as much with one and, lets say, 15 minutes extra, or is the training loss dependent on how much extra a player plays?

LCD has the opposite effect.
Your coach will decide who to play, and only use the depth chart as a small baseline.
Strictly Follow Depth Chart is by far the best setting to use to control minutes.
I use that almost exclusively in league games, and this week my player with the most minutes has 74.

My guess (note I'm new to the game, so I'm kind of speculating now) is that LCD is good whenever you play a game tht you expect to be tight and that is important enough to win. Then LCD ensures that you optimize the game performance. If you believe that you would loose or win easily (or dont care for some reason), then you can optimize training by strictly following depth chart.

Thank you. Very useful. I'll do that from now on.
