MVP Votes (Round6)

PART A

Game 1: TeamAkuma v Shepparton shooters (55372933)

Both teams looked inside to score with Akuma playing a man-to-man defense and Ezy trying to stop the likes of Abimbola by running a 3-2. It didn’t work. While both Weipeng and Viojan were solid as usual, combining for 65 of the 94 points scored by the shooters, the trio for TeamAkuma was too much for Ezy’s lot to stop. A great game that went into OT where TeamAkuma outscored the shooters 17-7 to win by 10.

3 votes: X. Weipeng (SHE) 38 pts, 14 reb (7OR) 13.0 rating (against Smeltz)
2 votes: K. Smeltz (TAK) 23 pts (11/14FG), 9 reb 16.0 rating
1 vote: C. Abimbola (TAK) 23 pts (3/4 3PTFG), 5 stls 15.5 rating

NOTE: Very hard to sort votes on this one. I went with Weipeng, despite his 5 TOs, having watched the OT period. Weipeng scored 6 of the 7 points and a couple of key rebounds while Smeltz was unsighted and Abimbola banked a couple of free-throws.

Game 2: Los Coolfreakz El’ Ninios v Geelong Vipers (55372935)

Well, Latino Heat got the tactics right in this one, using a Patient offense to slow the Vipers’ Princetown, but the Vipers were still able to score a convincing 34 point win. An all-round team performance secured this win.

3 votes: H. Bertens (GEE) 25 pts, 7 asts, 6 stls, 4 reb 15.0 rating
2 votes: B. Greger (GEE) 28 pts, 7 asts, 6 reb 12.5 rating
1 vote: J. kilijanek (LOS) 12 pts, 7 reb 9.5 rating

Game 3: Baxter Bogans v Whompas Donkeys (55372934)

The Bogans came out of the gates strong. Trikster’s put Tesone into PF for this one and although he was unable to fully dominate Santana, he kept the latter to a measly 6 rebounds while collected twice as many himself. While the big duos of Sanatna and Vino battled Tesone and Harrower, it was the guards, Asqhari for the Donkeys and Minqxuan for the Bogans, who top scored for their respective teams. Minqxuan was the better dishing out 11 assists to the Bogans big men which was a key factor in the Bogans’ 19 point win over the Donkeys.

3 votes: L. Minqxuan (BAX) 22 pts, 11 asts, 5 reb 15.5 rating
2 votes: J. Tesone (BAX) 19 pts, 12 reb 15.0 rating
1 vote: I. Santana (WHO) 19 pts (8/9) 6 reb 14.5 rating

PART B

Game 4: Western Titans v Vios Violationers (55372932)

The Violationers were out-muscled in this encounter. Filho was back to his best pouring on 34 points and 19 rebounds. With the other key titans playing their roles this one was always going to end badly for the Violationers. The Titans one every quarter, winning by 29 points.

3 votes: B. Filho (WES) 34 pts, 19 reb (5OR) 17.0 rating
2 votes: R. Muggleton (WES) 16 pts (6/10 FG), 7 asts 15.0 rating
1 vote: U. Samdup (WES) 11 pts, 13 reb 15.5 rating

Game 5: UWA Panthers v Moorditj Magick (55372936)

From the opening quarter, where the Magick outscored the Panthers 33-18, this games was going to be a hard one for the Panthers to win. The Magick continued their domination, courtesy of Captain, Marcelo “Hot Rod” Rodriguez, taking a 46 point lead into the final quarter. Although the Panthers regained some respect by winning the fourth, the Magick secured a comfortable 37 point win.

3 votes: M. Rodriguez (MGK) 41 pts, 7 reb, 4 asts 13.5 rating (SF)
2 votes: J. Qunging (MGK) 22 pts, 21 reb, 5 blks 14.5 rating
1 vote: I. Fischl (SXC) 29 pts, 4 reb 10.5 rating (SF)

Game 6: JW City Bulls v Home Axis (55372931)

The Bulls’ juggernaut rolled on in this game claiming yet another victim. This time it was Hax’s boys who played a Patient trying to limit the damage. It didn’t really work. The Bulls won every quarter and claimed their 6th win in a row to remain atop the ladder in the East.

3 votes: A. Armstrong (JW) 23 pts, 9 reb 15.0 rating
2 votes: W. Xinxuan (HAX) 35 pts, 4 ast 12.5 rating
1 vote: J. Corica (JW) 12 pts, 6 asts, 3 reb 17.5 rating

MVP Votes (Round6)
PART A
Game 1: Home Axis vs. Vios Violationers 74 - 91 (55372937)
These two teams who are very close to each other on the ladder, but the Violationers were too strong for Axis in the end with a 17 point win. By the end of the first half the damage was done, the Violationers had built up a 22 pt lead and never looked back. The inside offense of the Violationers too much for Axis with powerful Chinaman Zhen Guanlin having a solid game. All was not bad for Axis, a 49 effort from Axis' young MVP, Ivan Ješić a shining light in a tough loss.

3 votes: Z. Guanlin (VIO) 20 pts (9/15 FG), 7 reb, 14.5 rating
2 votes: I. Ješić (HAX) 49 pts (17/33 FG), 4 reb 13.0 rating
1 vote: T. Mahsun (VIO) 17 pts, 6 reb, 6 ast 11.0 rating

Game 2: TeamAkuma vs. JW City Bulls 80 - 95 (55372938)
A battle between two old foes here, Akuma having played two tough CUP games resulted in Akuma’s players having a tough time bringing enough enthusiasm for this game against the Bulls. From the outset the result was never in doubt for the Bulls, taking a big 18 pt lead after the first half. A strong effort from Akuma in the 4th quarter to make the score line respectable at the end of the game.

3 votes: J. Corica (JW) 25 pts, (4/8 3PTFG), 7 ast, 9 reb, 15.0 rating
2 votes: A. Dayneko (JW) 18 pts, 18 reb (5 OR), 1 blk, 13.0 rating
1 vote: A. Armstrong (JW) 17 pts, 12 reb (4 OR), 13.0 rating

NOTE: Very hard to determine the 1 point vote in this one, didn’t want to seem biased giving my guys all 3 votes, but Smeltz (16 pts, 12 reb) and Abimbola (16 pts, 5 ast, 4 reb) probably had similar games to Armstrong so I used the result as a tie breaker to determine the 1 pt. Also the fact that the 2 guys Smeltz and Abimbola were defending had stellar games also helped Armstrong.

Game 3: Whompas Donkeys vs. Western Titans 76 - 90 (55372939)
A powerful display all round from the undefeated Titans, flexing their muscle against a pretty good Donkeys side. The Donkeys came out firing and were looking to cause a massive upset after the first quarter with a 3pt lead going into the 2nd. Though the strength of the Titans shone through, particularly in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, building up a 17 point lead that set up another win for the Titans.

3 votes: B. Filho (WES) 37 pts (17/26 FG), 12 reb (3 OR), 3 stl, 17.0 rating
2 votes: F. Vino (WHO) 15 pts, 15 reb (5 OR), 15.0 rating
1 vote: U. Samdup (WES) 14 pts, 11 reb (3 OR), 2 blk, 15.5 rating

Game 4: Geelong Vipers vs. shepparton shooters 93 - 85 (55372940)
The Shooters were quick out of the barriers in this encounter, building up an 11 pt lead on the back of an 11 point, 9 rebound 1st quarter effort from superstar Junel Viojan with the scores at 21-4 at one stage. The Vipers came back in the 2nd after the lacklustre 1st quarter on the back of a strong quarter from Boryslaw Greger who had in total 19 pts in the first half, though the Vipers were still behind the Shooters 44-38 at half time. The Shooters looked weary going into the 3rd quarter and it showed through the 3rd quarter when the Vipers reduced the lead to 1 pt at the end of the 3rd.
An interesting 4th quarter was on our hands with the Vipers Polish guard, Greger amassing 28 pts and the Shooters Viojan adding 15 points to his first quarter total heading into the 4th. Viojan was on 5 fouls and this would be the determining factor before the start of the 4th. The Vipers took the lead for the first time since the first few minutes into the game with 10 minutes to go in the game, a lead they would not surrender. With 8.56 to go in the 4th and a 4 point deficit trouble struck for the Shooters as Viojan’s game was over with a shooting foul on Serb Brkljac.

3 votes: B. Greger (GEE) 38 pts (14/28 FG), 7 reb, 2 stl, 12.5 rating
2 votes: J. Viojan (SHE) 28 pts (39 mins), 14 reb, 5 ast, 14.5 rating
1 vote: H. Bertens (GEE) 24 pts, 10 ast, 3 stl, 15.0 rat

PART B
Game 5: UWA Panthers vs. Baxter Bogans 68 - 112 (55372941)

The Panthers were no match for the former ABBLer Bogans. The 3-2 Zone tactic applied by the Panthers was taken advantage of by the Bogans big men. At the end of the first half the score was 49-26 with Bogans Big man SBH having a solid first half scoring 13 points @ 50% and also grabbing 12 rebounds by half time.
The 3rd quarter the Panthers decided that they did not want to go home without putting in more effort and making the result a bit more respectable. The Panthers MVP PG Sven Tragter made up for a disappointing first half with a solid 3rd quarter, dishing out 5 assists and scoring 7 points. Unfortunately for the Panthers, it wasn’t enough and the Bogans showed their class by running away with the game once again in the 4th with contribution from all starting 5. From the Bogans, SBH the standout flirting with a triple double with Russian Daniil Prokopov picking apart the 3-2 zone and top scoring for the game. Sven Tragter from the Panthers, finished the game strong and was also close to a triple double but just wasn’t enough in the end.

3 votes: S. Harrower (BAX) 21 pts (10/19 FG), 19 reb, 6 ast, 2 blk, 14.5 rating
2 votes: J. Tesone (BAX) 16 pts, 20 reb, 2 stl 14.0 rating
1 vote: D. Prokopov (BAX) 22 pts (9/16 FG), 2 stl, 12.0 rating

NOTE: Another tough one, Panthers Tragter (13 pts, 10 ast, 5 reb) had a very good game considering what he was up against, but again the result was the difference between him getting 1 point and Prokopov getting one. Also Tragter’s opposite player scored 18 pts on him and Prokopov completely shut down the opposing SG, which again tipped the 1 point towards Prokopov.

Game 6: Moorditj Magick vs. Los Coolfreakz El'Ninios 108 - 84 (55372942)
The final game on tap was between to up and coming teams in the league. A strong first half performance from the Magick kept the Coolfreakz @ Bay, setting up a big 21 point lead heading in the lockers @ half time. The Argentinean Michael Jordan, Marcelo Rodiguez had a big first half, scoring 19 points, shooting @ 50% topped with 3 from downtown. Not to be outdone, Archie Dougan from the Coolfreakz also put up a solid 14 points.

The 3rd quarter was a lot closer, with the Coolfreakz standing up and putting up a fight, winning the 3rd quarter on the back of some quality shooting from Archie Dougan and Peni Umaga combining for half of the Coolfreakz 3rd quarter total. Though it wasn’t enough as the damage was done in the first half and the Magick came out victors in the end. The 2nd half was a very closer affair, Magick just winning 51-49. 4 players from the Magick hit 20+ points, impressive effort from them. A big double double from Magick big man and 70s superstar Uruguayan Juan Noya 28 pts and 20 reb with almost perfect shooting! For the Coolfreakz Archie Dougan played well above his pay grade, scoring a game high 32 pts and nabbing 12 rebounds.

3 votes: J. Noya (MGK) 28 pts (13/16 FG), 20 reb (6 OR), 15.0 rating
2 votes: J. Qunging (MGK) 20 pts, 13 reb (3 OR), 2 blk 12.0 rating
1 vote: A. Dougan (LOS) 32 pts (5 3PTM), 12 reb (6 OR) 8.5 rating (SF)

Note: Tough to not give points to Rodriguez (26 pts) and Dogan (20 pts, 8 reb, 6 ast) from the Magick, but I thought Dougan from the Coolfreakz had to be rewarded for a strong 2nd half performance and also top scoring for the match with a double double playing SF.

haha good effort Matty, you got a lot closer than i would've liked! A poor 4th quarter almost let your guys back in! Outscored by 20 pts!!
Jeez... commentary is hard work! I noticed I was getting into the games a bit too much towards the end and the commentary got LONGER and LONGER! hahah started off very brief but things changed quick.
