Boen 747 Takeoff!!! Boen Chong's 31 points help propel Philippines U21 to an OT victory over Brasil U21, 108-99 (81041)

Oslo, Norway -- Once again, Philippines U21 were playing catch-up in the latter parts of the game as they suffered turbulences in the first half. They were more prevalent in the second quarter, where the Filipinos allowed 32 points, while scoring only 19 points. But, Philippines U21 seemingly got their bearings straight in the second half, catching up with the Brazilians. Brasil U21 was still up, 88-82, in the last 1:37 of the regulation, but freebies from Delfin Jalando-on, and 2 clutch treys from Cornelio Porminal and Boen "747" Chong helped force an overtime at 90-all.

Philippines U21 eventually sealed the deal, 108-99. They will now sport a 2-1 win-loss record, which ties them with Italia U21, Bosna i Hercegovina U21 and Israel U21. Brasil U21, on the other hand, falls to 0-3, together with Nigeria U21.

"Either the guys really like to play these kinds of games, or they just want to give me a heart attack every game," Coach Leo jokingly told reporters after the game. Asked about their chances to make the second round, "Just heard that we're currently in a quadruple-tie with very tough teams. We definitely have a chance, but we need to avoid the same mistakes we commited in our previous games."

Boen Chong was on the forefront of Philippines U21's attack, finishing the game with 31 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Four other players breached double-digits for the Filipinos with Cornelio Porminal and Raphael Duruelo adding 17 points apiece, Delfin Jalando-on collecting a 16-point, 15-rebound double-double, and Gabo Familar orchestrating the Filipinos' offense to near perfection with 12 points, 10 assists and no turnovers. Delfin Jalando-on and Ken Nicolas provided post defense as they each gobbled 15 rebounds and swatted a total of 11 shots.

For Brasil U21, Jorge Egas led the way for them with 22 points, 6 rebounds 1 assist, 2 steals and 1 block. Lidio Barbieri, who's their leading scorer before this game, got injured 2:01 remaining in the second quarter, and did not return. He drove to the basket with Gabo Familar right in his face, and landed awkwardly on his right foot. Daniel Marques had a 20-point, 14-rebound double-double, while Barbieri's replacement, Máicon Possatti, added 16 points.

Nigeria U21 (0-3) is up next on Philippines U21's schedule. The game will be on the 12th of August, 1:30 AM (Manila Time). After Nigeria U21, the Filipinos will be pitted against the other three teams they're currently tied with (Italia U21, Israel U21, and Bosna i Hercegovina U21, in this order), so games are just going to get tougher. So, please support our National Teams!

Philippines U21 drops 51-point hammer on hapless Nigeria U21, 121-70 (81045)

Oslo, Norway -- "Calm before the storm." That's how Coach Leo described today's game as they easily got past Nigeria U21, 121-70. Philippines U21's next three games are up against Italia U21 (3-1), Israel U21 (2-2) and Bosna i Hercegovina U21 (2-2), in this particular order. Looking at the current standings, these aforementioned teams, together with Philippines U21 (3-1) and Magyarország U21 (2-2), will be fighting over the last 3 spots to qualify for the second round. Hong Kong U21 (4-0) got a better grip of the top spot after drubbing Bosna i Hercegovina U21 earlier, 114-103.

As expected by many, Philippines U21 raced to an early lead, and continued punishing Nigeria U21's defense in the next quarters. The lead swelled by as much as 56 points in the fourth quarter.

6 Filipino players scored in double-digits. Cornelio Porminal, for the first time, led the scoring mob with 21 points, while collecting 5 rebounds and 2 assists. This was also the first time he didn't start the game, but he was still effective in limited minutes, nonetheless. Boen Chong started again at SG, adding 17 points to his name, while Archimedes Pumar contributed 16 points and 7 rebounds.

Benigno Sasabo towered over the opposition and finished the game with 9 points, 16 rebounds, 3 assists, and a whopping 7 blocks. Bill Guerrero, who just recovered from an injury a few days ago, shook off the rust, started the game and grabbed 14 boards to help Sasabo on the rebounding department. Gabo Familar was once again tasked to lead Philippines U21's offense, as he paced the team with 12 points and 6 assists.

Timothy Akuoma, Allah Sanusi, Robert Ugbo and James Onoriode were tasked to carry the scoring load against Philippines U21, but the burden was too much as the latter locked in on the defensive end. Akuoma scored 18 markers, while Sanusi added 17 points. Ugbo had a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Onoriode got a near double-double of 12 points and 9 assists.

As mentioned earlier, Philippines U21 will take on Italia U21 on the 19th of August, 1:30 AM (Manila Time). The next games are tougher from here on out, so your support for our National teams is much needed.
